I didn’t know much about the living center until this year. The organization provides
Independent living, Assisted living, Memory care, Skilled nursing, Long and short term
rehabilitation, and Outpatient care. The purpose of our field trip is to experience how music
really helps patients of dementia and their experiences, also to enjoy their company.
3. What aspects of mental health do you imagine you will see during your observations?
4. What bias (or preconceived ideas) might you have about the location you will be visiting?
5. Please do some brief research on your location. Cite your sources as you look for
information on their mission statement, stated services and clientele supported.
The HSLC offers many different assisted living care (like mentioned up top), they offer
different room sizes to fit the patients needs, there are many different nurses and also have

Observe:
Review the prompts in advance. Add to the text boxes after each visit, with dates labeled.
- Take a look at your surroundings and read them as if close reading a text. Pay attention
to sensory details: signs posted, languages you hear, colors of the offices and uniforms.

your observations here.
Shadowing Date: Response: The visit was really nice, my partner was named Richard
1/29/18 he is a elder that has been living there for close to 10 years. The
environment is really quiet and calm, Richard likes sports and the put
doors. It smells super clean and it feels awkward at first then you get
used to it and calm. Richard doesn’t remember much of the present
but is good with somethings but he remembers completely on some
events when he was younger.
- Take notice of your reactions (emotional and physical) to different things and reflect on
why you might be reacting this way. Record these here.
Shadowing Date: Response:Today I was with my partner Richard. He was really tired so

about his past experiences what he did when he was younger and what
he would do outside. He talked about his kids and grandkids it was great.
Since it was such a nice day outside we decided to stay outside and

richard loves strawberries and fruit in general it was
Ask questions of the person you’re shadowing and/or the industry people you encounter:
- general questions of interest
- relating to your potential career choices
- mental health issues or challenges they encounter or see as important to consider.
Reflect:
After your return from shadowing each day, take a few minutes to reflect and answer the
following questions.
1. Describe a few specific highlights or observations from each day and a lesson (big or
small) you took away from each. Consider lessons that may be taken away from
negative experiences or challenges in your day as well as positive ones.
2. A. After your first visit: How did the experience meet, exceed, or fall short of your
expectations? How does this inform your expectations or preparation for your next visit?
What can you do to enhance your experience next time, if applicable?
Shadowing Date: Response: After my first visit i was very happy and surprised on how
much i liked the time i was there for. It was entertaining and a really
nice talk with my elder and really getting to know them and how they
like it there and also what they like to do.
B. On all visits: What connection(s) can you make between what you saw and mental
health:
- the role of mental health within this career path
- mental health needs or challenges within this community
- thoughts on how to prepare for or resolve these needs
Shadowing Date: Response: The connections that this experience has shown me is that
music can really brighten a person and refresh their memory and
really give them confidence to talk and tell you more about
themselves.
