Speech Support – Term 4

Time  If Spelling Mastery is cancelled, please take students individually for extra speech support during this time
 During classroom support timeslots (not during Guided Reading or Spelling Mastery)
 Approximately 5-10 minutes spent with each child in class.
 Any extra remaining time, please spend with poor attenders.

Have conversations with students that support:
- Discussion
- Use of new vocabulary about the topic (please utilise word wall)
- Expression of understanding about the topic and instructions
- Encourage students to speak clearly (for Emma this may mean asking her to slow down and focus on her words)
Examples Retell:
of  What were the instructions for this activity?
questions  Retell the instructions for the activity
or  Retell the learning intention – what are we learning?
prompts Reasoning:
to support  Can you explain to me why you gave that answer?
speech  Why have you used (particular grammar being learnt) there?
during  Where else could that be used? Why?
classroom Comparing:
support  What is the difference between…..? E.g. what is the difference between a full stop and a question mark, a simple and compound sentence etc.
 Where have you seen this type of grammar used before? Did it look the same? Was it used in the same place? E.g. was a comma used for a list or a pause, did it appear in a
book and then on a poster etc.
Explaining:
 Can you explain to me what you had to do to complete this activity?
 Explain the process you used to get to the answer
 Explain what strategies you used to get yourself out of the learning pit
 Explain where you think you might be on the learning pit
 Explain your next step for the activity
Reflecting:
 How are you feeling about this activity?
 What would you like more information on?
 Are there any questions you have about this activity?
 What is your next step? How can you get there?
 What do you like/dislike about this activity?
