Montana” is a smoke-jumper and transport plane
owned by Johnson Flying Service in Missoula.
Although she never saw any World War II action,
Miss Montana’s history includes dropping 15
smoke-jumpers on the Mann Gulch Fire north of Helena in August of 1949. 12 of
the firefighters died, along with a fire guard who had been on the ground, when
the fire blew up. As Aaron Flint of Montana Talks has been saying since last
week, if there is one Facebook page you want to keep an eye on, it’s that of Miss
Montana to Normandy — some incredible aerial video footage for your viewing
enjoyment! Also, Aaron has the audio clip of his interview with Bryan Douglass
from this morning’s show on the website Montana Talks. Would you believe the
crew were about the only ones that though Miss Montana would even make it? A
great interview indeed! The “Miss Montana” and 14 other planes plan to fly across
the English Channel to Normandy, France to take part in the 75th commemoration
of the June 6, 1944 D-Day attack, including dropping skydivers from Montana.
