The control units exchange information via two separate communication channels: the

information channel SAE J1587 / J1708 and the control channel SAE J1939.
Messages that pass through the information channel SAE J1587 / J1708 include fault codes and
warning messages. The SAE J1587 / J1708 channel also in some cases acts as a backup for SAE
J1939. VCADS Pro communicates only with SAE J1587 / J1708.
SAE J1939 is a faster channel and therefore can transmit more data critical to the time. SAE
J1939 is used to transfer data that the system uses to control, for example, the engine speed.
Troubleshooting tips:
Look at the system as a whole, check what other trouble codes are installed, in particular, in the
what time they are set.
The active malfunction in the braking system remains active until the ignition key is
is set to Stop. Always make sure that the brake control unit has dropped its
fault codes.
If more than one control unit registers the active DTC SID 231
control SAE J1939, you can disconnect the connector of one of the control units that register the
code
fault SID 231, and check the operation of other systems. This will help to find out,
whether the fault is in the control unit. Other control units must report that they do not receive
information from the disconnected control unit. If the fault persists,
disconnect the following control unit that records the SID 231 fault code. Keep in mind,
that the engine may not start when some control units are disconnected.
Measure the resistance of the communication cable, see section Measuring resistances.
If the fault occurs intermittently, it is likely that the fault is in the wiring harness
or in the connectors. See maintenance information, function group 371, information type
Diagnosis, Wiring and connectors, troubleshooting.
If failures occur periodically, you can run a test to troubleshoot the system
VCADS Pro 17004-3 Fault codes, test mode. (It is important that before testing
all fault codes have been deleted.)
If the intended location of the fault is known, but the immediate replacement of the wiring
harness
it is possible to make a test cable and connect it in parallel. In this case, it is necessary to
disconnect the old tips.

SAE J1587 / J1708

Among other things, the SAE J1587 / J1708 is used to transmit information about fault codes.
Interference in SAE J1587 / J1708 can adversely affect the reading of the fault codes and make it
difficult to read the fault codes. It may also be difficult to communicate with the source of
failure, which is necessary for performing tests with VCADS Pro. A simple way to test the
VCADS Pro communication with all control units on the SAE J1587 / J1708 channel is test
17034-3. Vehicle information, check The SAE J1587 / J1708 malfunction indicates that the
malfunction code may have been registered by a non-faulty control unit.
Caution: It is important to know which control units are equipped with this vehicle and what
codes
each unit installs faults.
There are several types of failures for which the SAE communication channel error code is
registered
J1587 / J1708 (SID 250). If the control unit registers a fault code, it means, most likely, that the
control unit itself is working. Failure can be a break or short circuit of the wiring harness in one
or more places. To exclude the breakage in the wiring harness from the examination, check the
voltage on each control unit.
One of the causes of fault codes on the channel SAE J1587 / J1708 (SID 250) may be the lack of
information transfer from another control unit. This can occur due to malfunctions of
components connected to another control unit. All other fault codes must be corrected before
troubleshooting a channel.
Caution: To distinguish the communication faults of the J1587 / J1708 and J1939 channels, for
faults on the J1587 / J1708 channel other FMI are used. For J1939, FMI9 is used, and for J1587 /
J1708, it is FMI12.
In this case, the FMI12 is primarily indicative of a communication failure, not a malfunction
component!

Wiring Harnesses SAE J1587 / J1708
SAE J1939
The information transmitted over the SAE J1939 data channel is used for control purposes. In
this regard, the diagnostics of the SAE J1939 are extended and provided with additional fault
codes for obtaining more accurate fault information. The fault codes are transmitted via the SAE
J1587 / J1708 channel.
If the control unit A does not receive messages from the control unit B, the PSID 200 -215 is
used to determine the silent control unit B. If the control unit B loses connection with the
channel, several other control units will set a fault code indicating the control unit B.
Example:
If there is a gap in the SAE J1939 channel on the PC unit connector of the vehicle control unit
(MID 144), then
messages from the vehicle control unit will not reach other control units on the SAE J1939.
The instrument panel and the brake control unit use messages from the vehicle control unit.
When these messages do not arrive, the instrument panel and the brake control unit set the fault
codes . The instrument panel sets the trouble code MID 140 PSID 201 FMI 9, and the brake
control unit sets the MID 136 PSID 201 FMI 9.
The PSID 201 is installed both by the dashboard and the brake control unit and points to the
vehicle control unit . This can be used to troubleshoot the control channel. If the fault is in the
wiring harness, a persistent contact between individual control units can be used to isolate the
fault. For some faults in the SAE J1939 channel , a fault code is generated for the SAE channel
J1939 (SID 231).
Warning: Inactive fault codes (PSID 200-215 FMI 9) are not displayed by the instrument. Can
only be read via VCADS Pro.
Caution: It is important to know which control units are equipped with this vehicle and what
codes
each unit installs faults.
