Transport Phenomena. Homework 1.

Due date: May 11th 2018

Exam date: May 9th 2018

1. Wet paint is considered as a bingham fluid. Starting from momentum balance, develop the velocity profile for paint flowing
through a pipe of diameter D and find an expression for the force required to promote the flow (a constant stress to must be
added to Newton's viscosity law).

2. A Newtonian fluid is in laminar flow in a narrow slit formed by two parallel walls a distance 2B apart. It is
understood that B << W, so that "edge effects" are unimportant. Make a differential momentum balance,
and obtain the following expressions for the momentum-flux and velocity distributions. Find an
expression for the mean velocity of the fluid.

3. A cylindrical rod of radius KR moves axially with velocity vz = vo along the axis of a
cylindrical cavity of radius R as seen in the figure. The pressure at both ends of the
cavity is the same Po, so that the fluid moves through the annular region solely
because of the rod motion. Find the velocity distribution in the narrow annular
region and the mass rate of flow through this region. Also obtain the viscous force
acting on the rod over the length L.

4. The viscosity of a Non-Newtonian fluid is measured with a concentric cylinder viscosimeter. The solid inner cylinder rotates at the
given velocity (RPM) and the outer is static. The inner cylinder has 0.056m internal diameter and 0.025m height. The external
cylinder has the same height and 0.1051m of internal diameter. The data is presented in table 1.

a) Applying the boundary conditions approximating the derivative (dV/dr) to a (∆V/∆r), adjust the data to a power law model for
the fluid for the determination of the rheological parameters.
b) Using the torque, show a plot of stress (τ) vs deformation (∆V/∆r) for the fluid.

RPM (min-1) μeff (cP) Torque (N.m)

20 4.2 0.0050

30 5.67 0.0108

50 7.5 0.0230

60 10.2 0.0395

5. Taking as basis the previous exercise, find the viscosity of a Non-Newtonian fluid in the lab (details will be further provide on
class).
