1 Introduction

™ QT250 2.0 is an electric valve actuator, technically signified as a

”Transversal flux motor”, an actuator motor for electrical control of butterfly, ball and
three-way 0 - 90o. Example on dimension for butterfly valves is from DN50 to DN200
PN16

The actuator is small, compact in its form, and provides high torque at low RPM.
The integrated controller and electronics enable the following programming possible:
Rotation direction, rotation speed, torque and position, and could easily be connected to
any supervisory control systems.

™ QT250 2.0 has a great potential in various tasks, where controlled

operation, movement and positioning are required.

™ QT250 2.0 is a compact electric valve actuator, which is made to fit

in to most of the systems.
The actuator is, besides the motor, equipped with our own planetary gear that provides an
operating torque up to 250Nm.

Easy installation and maintenance.

The only requirements are power supply (230V AC) and control cable(s).

Operation reliability.
™ QT250 2.0 has enclosure in anodized aluminum and watertight
according to IP68. An optical absolute encoder with adjustable end points replaces the
traditional mechanical end-switches.
™ QT250 2.0 is kept dry in almost all operating environments, by
utilizing the motor coils as self-regulated motor heating elements.
This will also keep the preservation costs in the operating period to a minimum.

User manual.
This user manual is based on NS 5820 and NS-EN 292-2.
The user manual should be kept available in order to be easily accessed if needed.

2.3 Operation area

Control of butterfly-, ball- and three-way 0 – 90° valves, typical dimension for
butterfly is DN50 – DN200 PN16. Upper dimension limit depends on type of valve
and pressure (PN). Approved to be used on OPEN DECK.

2.4 Restrictions in use

™ QT250 2.0 has a waterproof enclosure in class IP 68, and have
no limitations related to the environment if the installation of glands and gaskets is
correctly carried out. The actuator is able to work continuously for 1 hour submerged
to 5 m. under water. However, this is not meant to be a normal operational
situation, and the actuator will have to be inspected and prepared by qualified
personnel before another submerging can take place.

The actuator must be correctly adapted to the valve, see section 2.8 Outline
dimensions QT250 2.0, and data sheet for valve and process.
By use of valves with mechanical end-switches, the operating wheel must be used
with care! (The gear power transmission is 1:82).

The actuator must be connected to correct power supply, 230V AC 50/60 HZ and
operated within given temperature limits, see section
2.1 Technical information and Data sheet.

2.5 Choice of duty type

The Choice of duty type will determine the selection of the applicable motor. The IEC 34
recommendations have established several duty standards for motors permitting
application for on site Operating Conditions.

Lyng Motor choice of duty: S3 IEC 34 STANDARD

S1: Continuous duty

Continuous operation at load over sufficient
time for thermal equilibrium to be reached.

S2: Short time duty

Allows a sufficient rest period between
operations for the motor to cool down.

S3: Intermittent periodic duty

- Starting current does not significantly
effect the temperature rise.
- Maximum operating time to be specified.

S4: Intermittent periodic duty with starting

• Repetition of cycles consisting of:
• Starting period D,
• Period of operation at constant load N,
• Rest period R.

To be followed by the duty rating in % as well as the number of start per hour.

4.3 Assembling
QT250 2.0 has to be connected with a interface mounted together with plug-connector.
The connection must be done in powerless condition. For more information see user
manuals for (CANopen 2.0, Digital 2.0, CANopen 2.1 Ex, Digital 2.1 Ex)

5 Operation
5.1 Start, normal operation, stop and manual operation
Checklist of controls which should be carried out before start of
™ QT250 2.0, is described in section 4 Installation and preparation
Configurations and input/output signals depends of interface types,
see user manual interface.
The hand wheel can also operate ™ QT250 1.0

Operating hand wheel

(0o to 90o = 21 turns, gear transmission 1 : 82)

The valve is normally closed when the actuator

is in this position.

5.2 Disturbance of operation

™ QT250 2.0 is certified according to the strictest norm of immunity
and emission, but electrical installations that could interfere in form of induction etc,
have to be installed in sufficient distance to such facilities, and be screened/earthed in
accordance to electrical regulations.

5.3 Normal operation conditions

™ QT250 2.0 operates at 230V AC 50/60 HZ within a range of
variation in voltage between 180 - 264V AC. Outside these limits the actuator will stop.
If the voltage stabilizes within range, the actuator is automatically operational again.
The operating hand wheel can in a powerless situation operates the actuator, be sure that
the actuator position is in the working area (0-90°) before starting with remote control.
If slowness in a valve should occur due to wear and tear in stuffing box or gaskets, it is
possible to increase the operating torque to max. 250Nm in order to keep the actuator
operative until the defect can be repaired.
If the actuator is blocked, it could be necessary to reset it by turning off the power supply
and then on again. The interface configurations will remain.

Ver.: 1.0
USER MANUAL Date: 07.03.07
5.4 Protective measures
The actuator must be protected during repair work or maintenance of other facilities in
the area, to prevent it from being exposed to external strain caused by this.
All enclosure parts must be reinstalled after repair work or maintenance of the actuator.
The operating wheel is rotating when opening and closing the valve, and must not be
blocked during operation. Standing, stepping or placing items on the operating wheel can
cause hazardous situations.

5.5 Training program for operators

™ QT250 2.0 should be installed by qualified personnel.
Training programs for operators can be offered upon agreement.

6 Maintenance
6.1 General
™ QT250 2.0 is in principle a maintenance-free actuator, the
enclosure is dust- and waterproof, the end limit switches are consisting of electronic
optical slot readers, and the motor coils are also utilized as self-regulated motor heating
elements to keep the actuator dry in exposed operating environments.

6.2 Maintenance instructions

According to the above section, there is no maintenance instructions included in this user
manual. However, the actuator construction and assembling gives relatively easy access
to the various parts of the actuator in case of potential exchange, if any kind of damage
should occur.
See section 7.2 Actuator assemblage, where position number is attached to each part to
refer to the spare parts list.
See section 7.1 Spare Parts List for ™ QT250 2.0.

In situations where repair of ™ QT250 2.0 is required outside the

supplier’s workshop, the repair work should be carried out in good clean conditions.
The supplier should be contacted to advise whether major repairs should be performed on
site or at special workshops. Repair work done by unqualified personnel will affect the
guarantee, see section 2.7 Guarantee and Restrictions in guarantee.

All installation regarding power supply and electronics should always be performed by
authorized personnel.

By exchange of Interface, limits for 0° - 90° must be recalibrated. This must be done by
qualified personnel. Interface can not be switch between actuators, this will affect the
function of the actuator.

For all further information, contact supplier.

6.3 Trouble shooting
• Check if power supply is installed and connected to the actuator, and if the circuit
fuse is intact.

• Check if the Interface board is correctly installed, and the control cable is terminated
according to wiring diagram for ™ Interface.
See user-manuals interface.
• Connect the programming equipment and check if the configurations are correct in
relation to the valve, considering operating torque, speed and opening grades.
• Check if the actuator runs free by turning the operating wheel when the power is
switched off, and if the actuator has a holding torque after the power is switched on
again.
• Check if the actuator position is within the working range (0-90°), if not, operate it
without power to the right 90° segment.
