Take Home Quiz
GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS
1) Design the pipeline needed to transfer sea water to be used for firefighting system. The pump area
is located near shore taking suction directly from the sea.
2) Calculate the total dynamic head according to your pipeline design accounting all head loss due
to friction for pipes and fittings (for the minimum required valves and instruments refer to “Pump
Diagram” and “Tank Diagram”).
3) Use AutoCad or any other drawing software in presenting the 3D model of your work. Objects
other than the following are not required to be modelled:
The pump (as box with suction and discharge location as per “Pump Details”)
Pipe (as cylinder, no need to detail the thickness and inside diameter)
Pipe racks
Valves and instruments (as box with length 2.0 x pipe diameter and width/height 1.5 x pipe
diameter)
4) Design requirements:
Pipe velocity shall not exceed 4.0 m/s to prevent abrasion of pipe
Pipe shall not cross any of the areas occupied by buildings and structures
Pump baseplate can be located anywhere within the 10m x 10m pump area only
Pump can only take suction from maximum of 3 m below the pump centerline.
Pump suction nozzle is 8 inches and discharge nozzle is 6 inches.
Pipe support shall be provided for every 10 meter distance
Pipe elevated by 2 meters and above shall be supported by pipe racks (every 10 meter
distance)
Use gravitational acceleration equal to 9.81 m/s2 as needed.
Use internal surface roughness of 0.00015 ft for all material. Density of pipe to be 8000 kg/m3.
Loss coefficients:
o Check valve, foot valve, k = 5.0
o Gate valves, k = 0.20
o Elbows, k = 0.75
o Flowmeter, k = 13.0
o Reducer, k = 0.6
o Return bend, k = 2.2
Fluid properties:
o Sea water
o Temperature: 25 deg.C
o Density: 1023 kg/m3
o Absolute viscosity: 0.00096 Pa.s
5) This activity is equivalent to 1.5 times of a Quiz. Grading system will be based on the following
criteria:
Pipe Chart:
6) Submission date is on or before 27-May-2019. Late submission will not be accepted for whatever
reason.
REPORT FORMAT
3) Content:
Result and Discussion – explain and present your complete solution including the equation
used. There shall be separate calculation for: (a) overall head loss, (b) TDH, (c) power
consumption, (d) time to fill the tank and (e) cost.
FLUID MACHINERY QUIZ NO.3
amd 3.5
Problem Encountered – narrate the problems you have encountered in accomplishing this
project (e.g. problem in calculation, comprehension of the problem, CAD etc.). Also narrate
how you have solved these problems.
Appendix –
(a) attach all the drawings here (as minimum Plan View and 3D model shall be
provided).
(b) indicate each member’s assigned task and contribution. (I will be strict on
confirming this)
