BCAR 29 ROTOCRAFT-TERMINOLOGY

GENERAL
1. Fireproof- Capable of withstanding for a period of at least 15
minutes the application of heat by the standard flame

2. Fire resistant – As fireproof but in the period of 5 minutes

3. Flammable/ Inflammable – Will ignite readily or explode

4. Emergency/ landing/ Alighting – A controlled forced landing/

alighting/ made necessary by the occurrence spec. In requirements
eg: partial loss of power.

5. Crash landing – Out of control.

ROTOR SYSTEM – SPEED AND TORQUE

GENERAL
1. Rotor Maximum RPM ( Power On ) – max rot. Speed of the rotor
system permitted with power applied and approved for use during
periods of unrestricted duration.

2. Rotor Min RPM ( Power On ) – min rot. Speed of rotor sys. Permitted
with power applied, unrestricted duration.

3. Rotor Max RPM ( Power Off ) – ( as 1 ) in autorotation, unrestricted

duration

4. Rotor Min RPM ( Power Off ) – ( as2 ) in autorotation, unrestricted

period.

5. Rotor Never Exceed RPM – Max rot. Speed of the rotor system which
is not to be exceeded in any condition of operation and which is limited
in use to a max continuous period of 20 sec. This speed is to be chosen
at least 3% above the max rotor speed likely to occur under transient
conditions when operating at the speed of 1 and 3.

6. Rotor Max Continuous Torque – Max torque approved for the rotor
system for use during periods of unrestricted duration.

7. Rotor Take Off Torque – Max torque approved for the rotor sys. For
use during takeoff with all eng. Operating and limited in use to
continuous periods of 5 minutes.
8. Rotor Max Over Torque – Max torque that has been determined to
have no detrimental effect on the transmissions when used for a period
of 20 seconds.

-mishlanding, transient changes etc

-excl. Fatigue damage

Single Engined Helicopters

1. Rotor Max 1 Hour Torque – Max torque approved for the rotor
system and limited in use to a max continuous period of one hour.

Multi Engined Helicopters

1. Rotor Max Contingency Torque – Max torque approved for the rotor
system for use in the event of failure of one power unit, limited in
use to a max continuous period of 2.5 minutes.

2. Rotor Intermediate Contigency Torque – Max torque approved for

the rotor system for use in the event of failure of one power unit
during en – route operation.

ENGINE POWER
Pistons Engines
1. Takeoff Power – Output shaft power for use during takeoff, and
balked landing and limited for use to a continuous period of not
more than 5 minutes.

2. Maximum Continuous Power – Output shaft power for use during

periods of unrestricted duration.

Turbines Engines
1. Takeoff power and/or thrust – Power and/or thrust for use during
takeoff and balked landing, and limited in use to a continuous period
of not more than 5 minutes.

2. Maximum Continuous Power and/or Thrust – Power and/or

thrust for use during periods of unrestricted duration.
3. Intermediate Contingency Power and/or thrust – Power and/or
thrust for use after takeoff when a power unit has failed or been
shut down, during periods of unrestricted duration.

4. Maximum Contingency Power and/or Thrust – Power and/or

thrust for use during takeoff, balked landing when a power unit has
failed or been shut down and limited in use for a continuous period
of not more than 2.5 minutes.

*MAX CONTINUOUS POWER ( UNLIMITED )

*INTERMEDIATE CONTIGENCY POWER ( UNLIMITED )

*TAKEOFF POWER ( 5 MINUTES )

*MAX CONTIGENCY POWER ( 2.5 MINUTES )

POWER PLANT – FIRE PROTECTION

Designated Fire Zone

1. Any auxiliary power unit and exhaust system sections.

2. Any fuel burning heater and other combustion equipment

installation as prescribed in section 29.859

3. The compressor and accessory sections of turbine engines.

4. The combustor, turbine and tailpipe sections of turbine engine

installations except sections that do not contain lines and
components carrying flammable fluids or gases and are isolated
from the designated fire zone prescribed in ( 3 ) above by a firewall
that meets section 29.1191.
