MANILA, Philippines - The Philippines is one of
17 mega diverse countries, harboring more
diversity of life per hectare than any other country
in the world. Yet encroachment in forested areas,
pollution, over fishing and poor land management
practices are leading to biodiversity loss at an
alarming rate.
To address these threats, the Department of
Environment and Natural Resources-Biodiversity
Management Bureau (BMB) with support from the
United Nations Development Programme (UNDP),
other national government agencies, academe,
civil society and development partnershas
developed the Philippine Biodiversity Strategy and
Action Plan (PBSAP).
The PBSAP is the country’s road map in
conserving biodiversity and critical ecosystem
services for the next 13 years. Similarly, through
the UNDP’s Biodiversity Financing Initiative
(BioFin), the DENR-BMB has determined the
financing gap of implementing the PBSAP,
estimated to be at least P334 billion ($7.4 billion)
over the next 13 years, or P24 billion annually.

Biodiversity is a concept that has no
general definition. Usually it is used in a
context that stresses the need for attention
on our living environment and the
sustainable use of natural
resources.Biodiversity can be divided in
different types such as habitat, species and
genetic diversity.The integrated approach
used in coastal zone management is an
adequate method in dealing with the
matter of biodiversity.The problems and
benefits of biodiversity are many. They
focus on the need for sustainable
development and adequate use of coastal
resources.Loss of biodiversity and
biodiversity conservation are concepts that
provide the basis for biodiversity
management.The management of
biodiversity is a complex matter that needs
the involvement of many different partners
ranging from governmental organisations
to private companies, NGO's and
volunteers. This aside, national and
international commitment, legislation and
enforcement offer an essential framework
for promoting and maintaining biodiversity.

What is BIODIVERSITY?
Biodiversity is a modern term which simply means
“the variety of life on earth”. Number of different
species of plants, animals, and microorganism.
Biodiversity refers to the variety and variability of
life on Earth. Biodiversity typically measures
variation at the genetic, species, and ecosystem
level. Terrestrial biodiversity is usually greater near
the equator, which is the result of the warm climate
and high primary productivity. Our biodiversity is
very important to the well-being of our planets.
Increase ecosystems productivity, each species in
an ecosystems has a specific role to play. It also
supports larger number of plants species and
therefore, a greater variety of crops.
STATUS OF PHILIPPINE BIODIVERSITY
The Philippines is considered a mega diversity country
rivaled only by a few countries in the world when it
comes to variety of ecosystems. Many of the islands
comprising the archipelago are believed to have a
very high degree of land and animal endemism. The
Country hosts more than 52,177 describes species of
which more than half is found nowhere else in the
world (Philippine Biodiversity Conservation priorities:
a second iteration of the national biodiversity strategy
and action plan, 2002).
ENDEMIC PLANTS- plants that grow or exist in a
certain place or region .
GENETIC- Variation between individuals of the same
species.
SPECIES- species diversity is the variety of species –in
a given region or area.
THREATS TO BIODIVERSITY
CLIMATE CHANGE- change in climate
throughout our planets history have of
course altered life on earth in the long
ecosysytem have come and gone species
routinely go extinct.
DEFORESTATION&HABITAT LOSS- is a direct
cause of extinction a loss of diversity.
OVEREXPLOITATION- over hunting,
overfishing, and over-harvesting contribute
greatly to the loss of biodiversity killing of
numerous species over the past hundred
several years.
INVASIVE SPECIES- the introduction of non-
nasive species into an ecosystem can
threaten endemic wildlife.
POLLUTION- chemicals into the athmosphere
and in some cases depleting ozone levels to
dumping 19 billlion pounds of plastic into the
ocean every year. Pollution completely
distrumps the Earths ecosysytem.
