Chapter 1

INTRODUCTION
This chapter contains the background of the study, setting of the study, conceptual

and theoretical framework of the study, statement of the problem, hypothesis, significance

of the study, scope and limitation of the study and definitions of terms.

Background of the Study

In today’s generation, technology have become immersed in our everyday lives. It

is already a part in our way of living in order to make it convenient. Even in the school,

technology has been widely used around the world with the goal of enhancing the

teaching and learning process in order to develop more improved 21st century students

through the use of technology in teaching or educational technology. Educational

technology as an academic field can be considered either as a design science or as a

collection of different research interests addressing fundamental issues of learning,

teaching and social organization. Educational technology as practice refers to any form

of teaching and learning that makes use of technology (EduTech Wiki). In fact, 74 percent

of educators surveyed said technology is key to helping them expand on classroom

content; the same percentage said technology is a motivational tool; and 73 percent said

it helps teachers respond to different learning styles. Moreover, 69 percent said

technology has helped do more than ever before for their students (EdTech).

This topic is very important to every one since education is already considered as

one of the important needs that humans need to acquire. Because of this, there are many

studies that were conducted whether technology is a great tool in education or not, and

whether it has a significant relationship with the students’ academic performance.

Academic performance is defined as the students’ results of their performance in school,

or simply, the students’ grades.

According to The Manila Times, a survey conducted by Pearson Foundation in the

United States found that more than six in 10 college students and high school seniors

agree that they study more efficiently by using tablets. A study conducted by Houghton

Mifflin Harcourt in California also showed that students using iPads performed better in

mathematics compared to students using traditional textbooks. Another study at

Oklahoma State University found that 75 percent of students said the use of gadgets

enhanced their learning experience. However, according to research by Patricia

Greenfield, UCLA distinguished professor of psychology and director of the Children's

Digital Media Center, Los Angeles, “as technology has played a bigger role in our lives,

our skills in critical thinking and analysis have declined, while our visual skills have

improved. By using more visual media, students will process information better, however,

most visual media are real-time media that do not allow time for reflection, analysis or

imagination — those do not get developed by real-time media such as television or video

games. Technology is not a panacea in education, because of the skills that are being

lost.”

In the Philippines, Senior Highschool has only been implemented recently.

Because of this, there are only a very little researches and studies that are conducted

regarding on this matter in our country, but the use of technology has also been practiced.

That is why the researchers are conducting this study in order to determine if there is a

significant relationship between the use of technology in school for teaching and the
academic performance of the students, especially in the Grade 12 General Academic

Strand students of Holy Rosary Academy of Hinunangan, Inc.
