Industry Internship Programme (IIP) Guidelines - 2019
Every student must compulsorily take up an Industry Internship Program in any
corporate body acceptable to the college. At the end of the program, you must submit
a project report which will be evaluated by your project guide as well as your faculty
guide. THE IIP WILL COUNT AS 6 CREDITS. .
During the internship, students have to be in continuous contact with their faculty
guides either in person, e-mail or over phone to update the progress of their work. The
students have to submit their proposal and fortnightly reports through email in the
enclosed formats within the stipulated time. Additional sheets can be used to fill the
details where ever necessary. Faculty will keep a record of such communications and
monitor the progress of the students.
Pl ensure that your email ids and contacts are available with your faculty guide.

1. Project Types

a) Research Study: This is a research project with a well-defined problem(s), a formal


design, appropriate data collection, thorough analysis and well-reasoned
conclusions
b) On-the-job Training: This is a project built around a work assignment from the
company.
2. Project Reports

a) The project report should be written in the third person; writing in the first person
- using I / we / me - is not acceptable.
b) Report should be prepared using Microsoft Word as per specifications given below.
c) Report will be between 35 and 60 pages excluding annexures such as questionnaire,
excerpts of annual reports etc.
d) One copy of the final report to be printed and submitted to the faculty guide which
will be handed back to the student – refer item 10 under timelines.
e) If the company where you do the internship wants you to submit a printed report,
you could print a copy and get it “leather bound” using a black cover sheet.
f) Pages in the report are to be serially numbered (numbering by hand is not
permitted).
g) The fonts to be used in the report are as follows:
 Font - Arial
 Font size for the report: 12
 Line Spacing – 1.5 lines
 Font size for the chapter heading: 16 (Use STYLE HEADING 1, change font to

 Font size for the heading: 14 (Use STYLE HEADING 2, change font to Arial, size

h) The header and footers are to be used as follows:
 In the “header”, please indicate the Chapter name.
 In the “footer”, indicate the project title and the page number.
 The “header” and “footer” are to be used from the Table of Contents
onwards.
i) The wording of the project title should be cleared with your faculty guide
before you finalize the report. This is important as the project title will have
to be included in your resume for placement purposes.
3. For submitting your project report, two formats are prescribed.
a) Format A is to be used in all cases where the student is working on a specific
project or assignment given by the Company.
b) Format B is to be used, in all cases where students are asked to take up practical
on the job training.
4. Evaluation by the Company Guide

At the end of your summer internship, you must approach your Company Project Guide
and request him/ her to complete a formal project evaluation. The format for completing
the evaluation is attached – page 15. This is a confidential report and it has to be returned
to the College in a sealed envelope addressed to the Director, SJIM.
It is your responsibility to collect the evaluation report from the company project guide
(in a sealed envelope) and submit it to your faculty guide by 6 June, 2019.
5. The format for the Synopsis – in a PPT format (PRINT TWO SLIDES PER PAGE).
PLEASE REFER TO THE SAMPLE SYNOPSIS (emailed to students individually) FOR
GUIDANCE. Remember the 8 by 8 rule.

The project report should be presented in the following chapters:

Chapter One:
Industry & Company overview - 4 to 5 pages
Industry overview should include a description of the industry in which you have done your internship
and broadly should have the following contents:

 Global Scenario
 Indian Scenario CRISIL Research
 Players in the industry along with market shares is a good source for this.

Company overview - 4 to 5 pages


The company overview should contain a profile of the organisation in terms of the nature of its
business, SWOT analysis of the company, products or services, its competitors, turnover/revenue and
earnings. Please focus on the unit within the organization where the project is located. Please provide
your assessment of the information from secondary sources, don’t just copy and paste material.

Chapter Two
Introduction to the project – 5 to 8 Pages
a) Statement of the problem/topic of the study
b) Background of the research topic
c) Review of literature in the area of study –This should include: a brief description of the past
research studies along with details of the author, year of publication, name of the journal.
findings etc. Refer to a good Literature Review in any standard journal. Minimum five articles
/ papers published in the last 2 years to be reviewed.
d) Existing practices of the organisation in the area of study

Chapter Three
Design of the Study 10-12 pages

Please discuss the outline with your faculty guide. A suggested outline is:
 Objectives of the study
 Scope of the study,
 Hypotheses if any
 Definition of concepts included in the study *
 Methodology
o Sampling Plan
o Tools & Techniques used for collection of data
o Plan of Analysis
 Limitations, if any

* For example: if the study is in the area of Employee Engagement, you need to define Employee
Engagement, and other concepts like motivation, job satisfaction etc.

Chapter Four
Analysis of Data 15-20 pages
This chapter should contain an analysis of the primary data in tune with the objectives. The data
collected for each question should be reduced to a table followed by interpretation and inferences.
The analysis may also be supported by graphs, charts and diagrams, wherever necessary. The most
important aspect is your inference from the data analyzed and NOT a description of the data.

Chapter Five
Findings and recommendations 5-15 pages
This chapter should discuss the findings and recommendations.

Bibliography
The Bibliography should be in the following order:

i. Author, title of the book, edition of the book, name of the Publisher, place of publication, year
of publication
ii. APA convention should be followed

Annexures
The annexures should include a copy of the questionnaire or interview schedule, and any other
relevant documents or analysis done.

e) Definition of concepts included in the study - For instance: if the study is in the area of
Employee Engagement, you need to define Employee Engagement, and other concepts like

This chapter should include:
a) Work plan given to you
b) Timeline of activities expected during the project period
c) Actual timeline of activities

b) What concepts you covered in class came in handy to do your work?
c) What extra concepts did you learn that supplemented concepts covered in class?
d) Observations on the practices observed in the organisation vis-a-vis the practices understood
through academic inputs in the courses.

Chapter Five
Summary of Learnings & Recommendations 5-10 pages
Please discuss your reflections about the job you did and the potential for you in that career path.
Discuss any initiatives undertaken by you. Discuss the key learnings from this internship & your
recommendations.

Guidelines for preparing an Executive summary
An executive summary provides a quick overview or synopsis of a report, summarizing
the essential parts. It outlines the following information:
 Introduction & the relevance / importance of the topic chosen for the
internship
 The purpose of the study
 The methods used to conduct the research
 The results of the research
 The conclusions drawn from the research
 Recommendations for future actions.
The executive summary / abstract is generally written last. This allows you to
summarize all the major areas of the report.
Please note that the subheadings indicated above should not appear in the executive
summary.
A SAMPLE EXECUTIVE SUMMARY FOR YOUR GUIDANCE
Employee turnover is one of the key challenges facing the retail sector. High levels of
voluntary employee turnover has a number of adverse consequences, including, but
not limited to, lowered productivity and disrupted business continuity.
The aim of the study was to identify and analyze the reasons for high employee
turnover in ABC Ltd, and to suggest strategies for retaining key employees of the
organization.
Data was collected through a structured questionnaire which was administered to a
sample of 80 employees. Additionally, 18 employees were interviewed. The data was
analyzed using excel/ SPSS/ specific tests (like regression analysis ….. used to test the
hypotheses of this study.
The results suggest that monotonous work, low salaries and lack of job security are
the key reasons for the high levels of voluntary employee turnover at ABC Ltd.

INDUSTRY INTERNSHIP PROJECT


Guidelines for the Experience Sharing session
5 JUNE 2019
All students have to make a presentation for about 10 minutes on their summer
project experience. Presentations will be held on Wednesday, 5 June, 2019. The
purpose of these presentations is to share your Internship experience with your
classmates and the faculty.

Presentations will be made to a panel consisting of two faculty members. The
group names will be put up on the notice board.

Guidelines:
 In your presentation, you should cover the following points:
o Brief description of your internship project
o Narrate your experience, state what you have learnt and not the
tasks that you have performed
o Were you able to make use of the inputs that you received in the first
year?
o New concepts learnt
o What impression did you create on the company where you worked?
In particular, was your company project guide satisfied with your
performance?
o Not more than 10 slides
 For the presentation, you will be divided into separate batches. The order
of presentations will be decided by drawing of lots.
 The schedule of the presentations will be put up on the notice board.
