Car Crash PBL Report

Objective-

The purpose of this project was to design a cart that would ensure the safety of an egg. To

do this you were tasked to find a way to change the force, mass and collision time of the cart to

ensure the eggs safety using the formulas that were given.

Background-

For this project we need to fully understand what momentum, impulse and what is the

collision time necessary to protect the egg. Also what is the pressure and force needed to break

the egg. ​Momentum is movement that's measured of its mass and velocity. Calculating

momentum is simple you just have to multiply mass times velocity and you get momentum. The

formula is m x v = p. P is momentum just a short way to put it into an equation​. Impulse is an

amount of force and time interval during which the forces act. The equation is m Δ v = F t .

When collison time is greater, the force has a weaker impacted. When its less, the force is

stronger. In this case we want to increase the collision time so that the impact would not be as

strong.

Design-

The materials we used

- 20.5 popsicle sticks
- 3 cotton
- 1 rubber band
- Used glue gun 3 times
 We create a battery ramp to reduce to increase the collision, we also put some cotton

We create this type of seat to protect our egg and the surface

area that was protecting the egg was of 25%.

Important Information:

​The pressure necessary to break the egg is 16.89N/cm^2 . This was found by

__________.​The force to break the egg is 607.77 /cm. The collision time needed so the egg

could survive is 0.1068 this was found by multiplying the 12 clicks that we have with the value

of each click which is 0.0089. We weighted the egg and its mass is 50.3grams . Our surface area

that our car will protect is 24 N.

Initial Testing Results

On the first testing of our model the battering ram attachment detached from the base of the car.

Changes after Initial Testing-

After the first initial testing the front piece of our car

completely detached off of our teams car because its

velocity had an impact so massive on the popsicle sticks, it

caused the entire attachment to fall off. So, my group mates hot glue gunned the

popsicle sticks back to where it had fallen off and added cotton balls to the front

because it compresses easily and it increased ​collision time​ which initiates that the force will be

less.
