Abstract
Design of Structure for seismic resistance has been undergoing a major reappraisal in recent
years, with importance changing from strength to performance. Non-linear static or dynamic
analysis has to be carried out in extant for performance evaluation. Fragility curves are useful
tool for performance evaluation, since they allow estimation of the probability of structural
damage due to earthquakes as a function of ground motion indices or various design parameters,
e.g., peak ground acceleration (PGA), elastic pseudo spectral acceleration (Sa), and elastic
spectral displacement (Sd). As Resistance (R) and Demand (D) of a structure are subjected to
variation with time, it is difficult to anticipate Safety(S) of structure at any time t, (St = Rt - Dt).
Hence probability distribution for R and D can be done.
In the present paper, illustrative problems of 5 storey regular (R-5) and L-shaped frame (L-5)
lying in Zone-III and Zone-V resting on hard soil are considered for development of fragility
curve. Response reduction factor of 5 was used in the design with importance factor of 1.0.
Typical Storey height was taken as 3.20m. Dead load assumed includes self-weight of beam-
columns, wall and slabs and the Imposed load considered was 4.00 kN/m2. Analysis and design
of frames was carried out using ETABS-2016. Concrete Grade M25 and Steel Grade Fe415
was used for design.
Incremental Dynamic Analysis (IDA) of above frames was carried out using SeismoStruct
software for set of six ground motions from past Indian earthquakes having magnitude in the
range of 4.9-7.0. The ground motions are applied along Global-X axis for performing IDA for
all frames. Fragility Curves are then developed for Performance Evaluation using results of
IDA, considering the performance criteria as per ATC 40 for the Limit States of Immediate
Occupancy, Life Safety and Collapse Prevention.
From fragility curves, it is observed that there is negligible probability of exceedance of
Collapse Prevention Limit State for design PGA which shows satisfactory performance of the
frames. It is observed that probability of exceedance of different Limit States is in the same
range for Regular and L-shaped frames. L-shaped frames were designed for torsion considering
design eccentricity as per IS 1893 (Part-1): 2016 to incorporate the effect of Plan Irregularity.
It can be said that additional torsional moment considered in analysis compensates effects of
plan irregularity effect.
