NARRATIVE REPORT
SCHOOL-BASED IN-SERVICE TRAINING 2018/19

I. INTRODUCTION

True to its mission to the country, the Department of Education (DepEd) has
poured huge efforts to continuously improve the quality of education provided for the
Filipino children. To execute this means that teachers who facilitates the transfer of
knowledge be capacitated and enriched to the new trends of learning and how to
adapt to the nature of the 21st century learners.
In support for the continuing professional development of teachers, a
School-Based In-Service Training was done at Annafunan Elementary School on
October 22-26, 2018. The 5-day INSET aimed to enriched and refresh the teachers
on teaching strategies that targets the least mastered competency skills on certain
subjects and continuously improve the literacy and numeracy of learners.

II. ACTIVITIES
The first day of the INSET started with a simple program. Mrs. Gloria Narag
and Mrs. Cristeta Marco were the emcees. The first part of the program started with
the singing of the national anthem conducted by Mrs. Marites Madrid and followed
with a prayer led by Mrs. Virginia Balisi.
To inspire and officially open the activity, Elmer J. Narag, Ph.D., the school
head, gave his welcoming remarks. He emphasized the importance of continuously
improving the abilities of all teachers in order to help the at-risk and coping learners
of Annafunan Elemenatary School. Furthermore, he encouraged all teachers to share
their insights, question and raise any issues or concerns in any particular topic in the
field.
Mrs. Juliet Alan, Master Teacher II, presented the purpose of this year’s
INSET and the line-up of activities for the whole week.
The first resource speaker was Mrs Virginia Balisi. She discussed about
“Integratibong Dulog sa Makrong Kasanayan sa Napapanahong Pagtuturo ng
Filipino”. She presented first the jargons that we used when translated to Filipino. For
example when we use the term “Dulog”, it is linear to “Approach”. The topic mainly
emphasized the integration of the different performance standard in Filipino using one
literary piece. She also introduced a teaching strategy named “Bukas-Sara” which is
used for long selections. After the discussion, the teachers were grouped into 2. They
were asked to make a sample lesson, applying what had been discussed.
The second session was facilitated by Mr. Jerald Melad. He shared about
the different strategies that teachers can use to help students unlock difficult words
and expand their vocabulary. He introduced the acrostic C.O. D. E. which means
Connect, Organize, Deep Process and Exercise.
In the afternoon, Mrs. Joana Lustares led the session. She presented
different teaching strategies that can be done in order to improve the reading
comprehension of the learners. She discussed suggested activities that can be done
in the beginning, during and after reading. She listed the sources of difficulties that
prevents our learners from having an in-depth understanding of what they are reading.
The next session is all about the Inquiry-based Instruction with 5E model
strategy that can be applied when doing lesson plans, for Science subject particularly.
Mrs. Jesamyn Lozada expounded what is inquiry-based instruction and presented
sample lesson plans showing how teachers can apply this model when doing their
lesson plans. The teachers were asked to make their own sample of a lesson plan
using the 5E Models.
The third speaker in the afternoon, Mrs. Florence Baquiran discussed the
general steps in test construction. She reviewed the adapted Cognitive Process
Dimensions and described the characteristic of a good test.
On the second day of the INSET, Mrs. Cora M. Pattaguan, Ph.D., Education
Program Supervisor for Kinder, shared her expertise regarding the Result-based
Performance Management System (RPMS) and Philippine Professional Standards
for Teachers (PPST). She discussed the bases of PPST, what is its essence for the
teachers and the strands containing the standards that each teacher should meet. It
was a thorough look on the features of PPST and what each module contains. As for
the RPMS, she articulated the well-defined domains, strands and indicators that
articulate the professional accountability of each teacher. She emphasized the duties
and responbilities of teachers that should be the basis of their reflection in completing
their everyday work.
The afternoon session started with Mr. Sherwin Pagulayan sharing the
different techniques in problem solving. He gave sample problems, asking teachers
to group the problems into routine or non-routine. After which, he asked the teachers
to solve the same problems and showed to them different strategies that can be
introduced to the learners. This includes illustrations, acting out, etc when learners
find difficulty in making routine equations.
The last session was led by Mrs. Marites Madrid discussing about the
Instructional Delivery in MAPEH particularly in Music. She enlightened the teachers
regarding the basic elements of music and how can it be simplified to ensure transfer
of knowledge to the students.

The third day of the INSET, the teachers were guided on the Assessment
Guidelines for Teaching Positions by Mrs. Catalina Tuppil, Public Schools
Superintendent of East District. She educated the teachers on the rigorous and
meticulous process of selection and the criteria that is asked for each teacher to meet.
She also taught the teachers of the correct papers that should be presented during
the assessment process and its proper organization. She discussed the pointing
system and clarified the criteria like innovative projects, introduction of a teaching
strategy or instructional materials. More importantly, she encouraged each teachers
to try and aspire for a promotion.
Mrs. Rosario dela Cruz, Ph.D, Public Schools Division Supervisor of North
District visited to monitor the implementation of INSET and also shared her insights
regarding the assessment process. Mr. Elmer J. Narag, Ph.D also shared his
experiences during the process of his promotion.
The second facilitator of the day was Ms. Joyce Dayag wherein she
discussed teaching strategy to address least mastered competencies in Math
particularly in Patterns and Algebra. This session was followed by Mrs. Juliet
Quinagoran who discussed about Developing Literacy the MTB Way. She reiterated
the importance of Mother Tongue, mostly on Kinder to Grade 3 when developing the
learner’s literacy skills.
The last activity for the day was a lecture-demo by Mrs. Juliet Alan, Master
Teacher II. It was a demo teaching showing the integration of application of
knowledge and content within and across the curriculum. The subject was
Mathematics and she integrated ESP, English and MAPEH. She also introduced an
online assessment using the website kahoo.it
The day started with a lecture demo by Mrs. Rosemarie Talosig, Master
Teacher I. Just like Mrs. Juliet Alan, she demonstrated the integration of different
subjects on the topic she is teaching. She also showed teaching strategies that Kinder
to Grade 1 can use to strengthen letter-sound knowledge and contextualization when
making stories as spring board for the lesson.
Mrs. Marites Taguinod, Master Teacher I, also shared her expertise by
showing a recorded demo teaching. After the video was played, she and the teachers
were encouraged to give constructive criticisms on how she taught the learners in
Grade VI.
A personality development topic was tackled by Mr. Dave Domingo. He
discussed about proper grooming, choosing proper attire and application of
appropriate make up for the teachers. He gave a demonstration on simple makeup
routine that a teacher can use everyday.
Lastly, Mr. Elmer J. Narag, Ph.D., our school head discussed about two topics:
Child Protection Policy and Issues on Administrative Cases. In regard to Child
Protection, he emphasized the importance of positive discipline in order to prevent
any incidence of complaints on a student to a teacher. He explained the process and
legal bases of child protection and expounded the responsibilities of the members of
the child protection team. As to regards on Administrative Cases, he highlighted
incidences and circumstances that can lead to a teacher being subjected to
administrative cases.
Mr. Elmer J. Narag, Ph.D., led the last session for the INSET. He continued
his topic yesterday on Administrative Cases and proceeded to the next session
wherein he explained what is School-Based Management. He expounded on its 4
components and assigned 4 teachers to lead a team to prepare the documents for
each component.
The closing program was held in the afternoon. The teachers were given
the opportunity to share their insights, learnings and reflections on the 5 day activity.
As a whole, the 5-Day INSET was indeed a very fruitful and successful one
because everyone of us did the assigned task efficiently and promptly.
