Undergraduate Research
❖ Junior Year
This research study was performed to gauge overall tick-borne disease awareness. A
survey, designed by the principal researcher, was conducted over the school year that was
designed to quantify awareness. In a literature review, a synthesis of three scholarly
articles in reference to tick borne diseases, as well as education, was performed. Based on
the survey results, one can infer that the sample population has general awareness of tick
borne diseases. Out of 114 responses, only two participants did not know what a tick
borne disease was. That is roughly 1.75% of the survey participants. Conclusion: In
conclusion, the awareness of tick borne diseases is high. However, in depth knowledge
could be identified as mediocre and could be improved.
❖ Senior Year
The medium of growth for the avian species “in utero” is that of a shell. The shell is the
home for the embryo to develop. The objective of the experiment conducted was to see if
embryonic development was possible to occur outside of the shell to term (21 days of
gestation). The methodology was a simple experimental design. Two trials were
conducted over the period of the Shenandoah County Public School academic school
year. If the fertilized cell is removed from the egg and put into a different medium of
growth then the embryo will develop to term. The independent variable was the medium
of growth (plastic cup, glass jar, et cetera). For a control group, some of the embryos
remained in the shell. The dependent variable was the amount of embryonic development
overtime. The results of the experiment were not conclusive. Overall, there was
embryonic development in both trials. The first trial experienced more development of
the fetus overall. However, none of the non-control groups hatched out of the shell. In
conclusion, the experiment was not conclusive. More trials need to be conducted for a
more accurate set of data. Two trial periods are not sufficient for a conclusive set of

evidence. A controlled laboratory will also present more accurate data. Overall, although
the research conducted was not conclusive, it still contributes to the current scientific set
of knowledge.
