Many people believe that use of contraceptive methods is a safe practice to avoid unplanned

pregnancies and abortions, however that is not the case. Abstinence is the act of not initiating
intercourse or any sexual activity in a relationship for a certain period of time, or during a
specific period of time. Many believe that abortion should be a choice however, and usually opt
for their right to have an abortion, although it is frowned upon by many as well. With this
information, we either encourage practice of abstinence to not deal with unplanned pregnancies,
or plan your parenthood and steer away from contraception that could damage the body and
mind, young and old alike.

Abstinence is the act of not initiating intercourse or any sexual activity in a relationship for a
certain period of time, or during a specific period of time. “Abortions cause psychological
damage. A peer-reviewed study published in the Scandinavian Journal of Public Health found
that "Young adult women who undergo... abortion may be at increased risk for subsequent
depression." A website called ProCon listen a Con of an abortion, which is usually the side effect
of unplanned or unwanted pregnancy. “The birth control pill is not the most effective form of
birth control. Among birth control methods, the Pill ranks seventh in effectiveness. Typical use of
the Pill results in nine unintended pregnancies out of 100 women after one year of use and
increases steadily to 61 unintended pregnancies out of 100 after ten years of typical use.”
Another Con but for birth control pills, the Con itself explains how contraceptive methods are
not as “safe” as we think. Also according to ProCon.org, “Teens are not knowledgeable enough
to have access to OTC birth control pills.
The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists stated, “adolescents need special
attention at every visit for contraceptive services, including comprehensive counseling about
sexuality, sexually transmitted disease and emergency contraception." This shows that the use of
even a general birth control method could damage the younger consumer population physically
and mentally, which is not something anyone wants for themselves or their close ones.

Many people believe that a woman should have rights to her own body, and she should.
However, those rights shouldn’t be abused for the mother’s irresponsible actions. Many also
think women should have the right to an abortion when cases of rape or incest come up, but
those cases make up less than 2% of abortion cases.

In conclusion, people should practice abstinence to not only save a lot of time and effort but also
to have less complications with birth control or pregnancy. Young people who rely on
contraceptives can have many internal problems after taking the contraceptive for a certain
amount of time, or have to experience mountains of pain only because they were not careful. Not
only does certain contraceptive use damage physically, but mentally as well, contraceptives have
to change your hormonal buildup to work properly, which can lead to depressive or aggressive
mood swings in young adults. Not only do adolescence not have enough knowledge of over the
counter pills or prescription drugs, but most of the young generation also needs special attention
during contraceptive purchases so they can be instructed properly on both how to use them and
how to use them consistently. Along with that, adolescence need to be educated on how most
usage of barriers during sexual intercourse still has a big chance of failing and ultimately
resulting in unplanned pregnancy. Even if the issue all stems from inappropriate knowledge of
how sexual activity works, adolescence in this generation should practice abstinence to avoid
having to rely on contraceptives and to avoid unplanned pregnancies that result in less
complications.
