8th/9th June 2019 – PENTECOST SUNDAY
One of the most profound experiences I had
from doing the Camino was with the yellow
arrows that marked the way towards
Santiago de Compostela. On the first
morning of the walk, I stepped out of the
hostel feeling very lost and unsure even
whether to go up or down the road. Then,
for the first time, I noticed a faint yellow
arrow painted on an electric pole across the
road, pointing to the right. I followed the
arrow and walked 50m along the road until
I reached a messy 5-way roundabout and
was again feeling a bit panicky. Upon closer
inspection of EVERY object and surface area
around me however, I finally found another
yellow arrow pointing me towards one road.
These arrows were quite small and subtle,
they were almost like a ‘secret message’:
invisible to 99% of the population. Yet once
I knew what to look for, I suddenly saw that
they were all over the place! – on poles,
walls, on the ground, fences, rocks, water
meters, tree – there were arrows every 20m
or so, pointing me in the right direction.
These arrows made me reflect on God’s
presence in our lives, and how the Holy
Spirit works. There may be particularly
special moments like the Pentecost where
the Spirit manifested Himself in a tangible
and unmissable manner: “a powerful wind
from heaven, the noise of which filled the
entire house” was heard, and “something
appeared to them that seemed like
tongues of fire” – a magnificent display to
mark what we come to call the ‘birth of the
Church’. It was like a billboard with a big
bright yellow arrow, pointing the disciples
to their mission: go and preach to all people!
But the Spirit is present not only in these
‘loud’ events – on the contrary, the Spirit is
always at work in us. Psalm 104 expresses it
beautifully: “All your creatures depend on
you. Take back your spirit and they die.”
It is not by chance that the Hebrew uses the
same word to denote both ‘breath’ and
‘spirit’, Ruah – our psalmist was not just
talking about spiritual life, he really meant
our physical life! If the Spirit is not in us, it
will be like taking our very breath away.
If the Spirit does not impart his gifts, there
will be no intelligence, no creativity, no
wisdom, no strength, no courage, no love, no
faith in us at all.
This same Spirit gives us numerous and
constant direction on what we need to do if
we want to live a meaningful, happy and
fulfilling life that gives us a true sense of
peace and joy. The signs are already there,
small ‘arrows’ scattered throughout our
lives – words and advise from someone,
events and circumstances in our lives, our
own conscience (the Spirit speaking softly in
our hearts!), ideas or projects that inspire
us, etc. Perhaps this week we can play be on
the lookout for these ‘secret messages’ from
the Spirit, hidden in the ordinary and
waiting to be noticed!

Celebrate World Refugee Day on the UK
borders, with a day of activity in Dover!
We will commemorate those who have died
trying to get to the UK, and celebrate those
trying to welcome refugees on our borders,
 finishing with a service and candle-light
walk on the white cliffs of Dover. Coach
leaves St John Vianney's West Green Road,
N15 3QL 10.30am and leaves Dover to
return at 8pm.

OLIVE WOOD CARVES FROM THE HOLY
LAND (BETHLEHEM)
We welcome Rana of the Good Shepherd
Company from the Holy land
(Bethlehem) which is based in Nottingham
and works alongside with St. Vincent De
Paul society for orphans and elderly in the
Holy Land on the
weekend of 22nd/23rd June (after all
Masses), she will be selling their produce
here from the olive wood (rosaries,
crosses, cribs and religious statues) in their
behalf. This will prevent the Christians from
leaving the country in search of better work
opportunities, as a test survey from the
bishops of Jerusalem reveals there is only
forty one thousands Christians left in the
area. Their goal is to support and help the
Christian families in the Holy Land to stay at
work as olive wood craft is one of the most
important source of income for them (90%
of the Christians rely on this sale).
