While most people are hectically trying to fit in a crowd of interests, attitudes, and styles,
there are those people who choose to stay out. They donʼt suffer from the fear of missing out,
and would rather miss out on many things they find quite trivial.

Being lonely has nothing to do with being a loner. In fact, these are two completely different
things. A person feeling lonely is not a loner, but quite the opposite. Loners choose to be alone
in most cases.

But, those that are friends with a loner are fortunate people. In addition, loners are, without a
doubt, beneficial and good friends to have. Even though theyʼre more selective than other
people when it comes to choosing friends, loners are also more likely to be down to earth that
benefits themselves as well as those that they interact with.

Moreover, the time these people spend with their friends is productive and highly positive for
everyone involved as they do not want to spend energy or time doing or talking about
insignificant things.

“Nobody enjoys the company of others as intensely as someone who usually avoids the
company of others.” ― Mokokoma Mokhonoana

There are actually two different types of loners. The extroverted loner, who has no problem
making friends or being social, but chooses to be alone, and the introverted loner, who
actually feels more secure and safe by being alone, not having much of a choice.

Extroverted loners carry great potential to be some of your best friends, because after all,
theyʼd rather be spending time alone anyway, so if they want to spend their time with you, itʼs
because they really like you. Theyʼre not about to hang out with just anyone.

“I dislike interaction. The less I say the better I feel. I was naturally a loner. I didnʼt want
conversation, or to go anywhere. I didnʼt understand other people who wanted to share
their emotions…I didnʼt make for an interesting person. I didnʼt want to be interesting, it
was too hard. What I really wanted was only a soft, hazy space to live in, and to be left
alone. Relationships never worked with me. I always lost interest. I simply disliked people,
crowds, anywhere, except at my readings.” ― Charles Bukowski

The introverted loner is easily overwhelmed by crowds or large groups, so they choose
different social avenues, like online forums or communities rather than concert venues or
bars.

They still crave human interaction just as much as their extroverted peers, they just go about
pursuing it differently.

But if thereʼs one thing to take away from this article, itʼs that being a loner is entirely different
than being lonely.

There are numerous reasons for a person to enjoy simply existing in solitude, so if youʼre
starting to realize that you might be a loner, donʼt worry about being persecuted or
stigmatized, embrace it.

“Quiet people always know more than they seem. Although very normal, their inner world
is by default fronted mysterious and therefore assumed weird. Never underestimate the
social awareness and sense of reality in a quiet person; they are some of the most
observant, absorbent persons of all.” ― Criss Jami

Loyalty and intelligence are your hallmark characteristics. So, be smart, choose your friends
wisely, and donʼt be afraid to say “no” when a night in by yourself sounds better than a night
out on the town.

“You get so alone at times that it just makes sense.” ― Charles Bukowski
