WINDS Weekend! 2019 - nWinds Biography

Formed in 2018, nWinds is an ensemble that consists of passionate musicians and educators that
want to do their part for the Singapore Band Community by promo@ng and making Wind
repertoire for smaller ensemble seBngs more accessible to students.

As Student-group Wind Bands in Singapore are gradually geBng smaller in size, our idea was to
form a mixed wind ensemble that caters and connects with students on a learning and musical
level, as well as to show students and interested educators the vast possibili@es of a small
ensemble. The "n" in nWinds was actually drawn from the algebraic leKer, which can refer to any
Variable. Through this, we would also like to display the wide array of styles and genres a group like
this can achieve.

nWinds made its debut in 2018 at the Singapore Band Clinic held at Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of
Music as a Double Woodwind Quintet. Through this we were able to be a demonstra@on ensemble
in masterclasses for the Band Directors and Band Students that par@cipated in the Band Clinic. In
2019 nWinds debut in the Esplanade with its Brass, Saxophone and Percussion presen@ng a wide
range of musical genres for the general public at Esplanade Cool Classics: Band Weekend.

AKached below are our permanent members of nWinds and we are made up of current music
students or music graduates that have been teaching ac@vely in local Secondary School Bands.

2019 Singapore Conduc3ng Masterclass with Maestro Douglas Bostock

(8 June 2019 to 9 June 2019)

The 2019 Singapore Conduc@ng Masterclass with Maestro Douglas Bostock is an open and @cketed
event where 10 Conductors will be chosen to work ac@vely with Maestro Douglas Bostock on
repertoire from Mendelssohn, Mozart, Beethoven, Stravinsky and Dvorak. Band directors who are
registered for the whole WINDS Weekend! 2019 will be allowed in as observers for the class.

2019 Singapore Instrumental Clinic with nWinds

(10 June 2019 to 11 June 2019)

The highlight of WINDS Weekend! 2019 will be the inaugural 2019 Singapore Instrumental Clinic
with nWinds. The 2 day event will give students the opportunity to play in a masterclass seBng as
an individual or sec@on allowing them to absorb the most through collec@ve and experien@al
learning. Band Directors through this 2019 Singapore Instrumental Clinic with nWinds will be able
to obeserve and gain new knowledge on how to beKer help their students with instrument specific
issues.

There will be a recommended schedule for all band directors. However, we also welcome Band
Directors to observe and cater the course for their own needs, as there is no requirement to
adhere to the given schedule during the Wind Instrumental Clinic. So they can have the freedom to
observe any of the Wind Instrumental Topics held at any alloca@on in the venue. Topics will include
embouchure forma@on, tone produc@on, reeds, posture, ar@cula@on, prac@ce methods and
technique class. This will eventually culminate in an in-house performance by all the par@cipants
with their clinicians and affiliates of nWinds to give par@cipants the opportunity to perform
alongside their teachers and professionals of the Singapore Band Scene.
