Applications are processed twice a year, in Spring and in Autumn. Deadlines can be found in www.tut.fi/en/, point Current
students in top of the page.

Time limit for completing a master’s degree

If a student already holds a bachelor’s degree and is admitted to the University to directly pursue the degree of Master of
Science in Technology/Architecture, his/her normative time-to-degree is two years. However, these students have four years to
complete their degrees without applying for an extension.

For students who accepted their place at the University in autumn 2014 or earlier, an absence of no more than four semesters
(two years) will not count toward the time-to-degree, if the student has enrolled as absent. An absence that exceeds four
semesters is counted toward the student's time-to-degree. This does not, however, apply to absences prescribed by law, such
as Finnish military service, voluntary military service or maternity, paternity or parental leave. Students must enrol as absent and
present a certificate (for example, a military passport, child's birth certificate, decision by the Finnish Social Insurance Institution
KELA), if they are on leave due to the above reasons. The certificate of absence is submitted to TUT’s Student Affairs Office

Students are required to enrol either as present or absent at the University. If a student fails to enrol, he/she will be
considered absent. Absences that exceed the maximum two-year time limit will reduce the time left for degree completion.

Extension of study time

From August 1st 2017 onwards extensions will not be granted if the student has not completed at least 1/3 of his/her target
degree.

Students who reach the normative time-to-degree can apply for an extension from the University. The extension will be granted,
if the University considers that the applicant will be able to complete the remaining studies within a reasonable time. The
decision to grant an extension will be based on the students realistic Personal Study Plan (PSP). The expression reasonable
time refers to a time that does not exceed the normative time-to-degree, which is two years for a master's degree. However, the
student's studies must progress in accordance with the Personal Study Plan and he/she must earn at least 30 credits per year. If
there are less than 30 credits missing from the degree, the student may be granted an extension of no more than one year. If
only the master's thesis is missing from the degree, the student will be granted an extension of no more than one year, or one
semester in case the thesis is nearly finished.

Students may request the University to consider their life situation when making the decision to either grant or reject an
extension. If a student makes such a request, he/she must provide sufficient documentation to back up the claims. The
University considers applications for extension twice a year. The application deadlines are in May and November. Applications
for extension are delivered to the Faculty Office. The dean decides on granting extensions upon presentation by the academic
officer of the degree programme.

A student whose application for an extension is refused will lose his/her right to study at the University. Students who have lost
the right to study at the University and wish to continue their studies later on must apply for readmission and an extension to
their study time. The applicants must demonstrate that their situation has considerably changed since the previous application
for an extension was rejected.

Re-enrolment while seeking for an extension to time allowed for degree completion

In case a student has reached the maximum time limit for degree completion and the deadline for enrolling for the academic
year has expired, he/she must also apply for re-enrolment. Students who re-enrol must pay a re-enrolment fee of 35 euros.
Payment details will be provided by the Student Affairs Office upon successful application. Students can officially re-enrol after
their application has been approved and they have paid the re-enrolment fee and, if necessary, the Student Union membership
fee. Please note that the re-enrolment policy applies to former students who have lost their right to study at the University and
not to students who have never held such a right. In other words, students seeking re-enrolment apply for the right to continue
their studies at the University. Applications for re-enrolment will only be accepted, if the applicant’s temporary study right has not
expired and the current degree regulations do not prevent the restoration of his/her status as a student.

Appealing against the decision to reject an extension (Degree regulations 49§)

A student who is dissatisfied with the decision concerning the forfeiture of his or her study right may submit a written appeal to
the person who made the decision within 14 days of receiving notice thereof (558/2009, Section 82).
A student who is dissatisfied with the subsequent decision may appeal to the Administrative Court within 30 days of receiving
notice thereof.

If you need more instructions on how to apply for an extension or help in preparing your Personal Study Plan, please contact the
academic officer of your degree programme.
