01
A welcome note
I am delighted to welcome you to our 2019/20 RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra
Season. This is an exciting time for us as we welcome our Chief Conductor, Jaime Martín
in his inaugural season. A highly regarded flautist, Jaime turned to full-time conducting
in 2013 and holds the positions of Artistic Director of the Santander Festival and Music
Director of The Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra. Jaime Martín brings remarkable
experience to the RTÉ NSO from multiple perspectives and I look forward to working
with him in the continuing development of your National Symphony Orchestra.

This season marks the third with our esteemed Principal Guest Conductor, Nathalie
Stutzmann whose star is in the ascendency, and we look forward to some exciting
programmes with her again this year.

Our audiences are at the core of everything we do and it is heartening to tell you that
the numbers attending our live events increased significantly in 2017, and have been
maintained in 2018. For this we are grateful. Thank you for your loyal and continued
support. We do not underestimate its value or importance.

02
This season we have decided not to differentiate between concerts as in the past.
However, we will continue to ensure our core audience is served. Our opening concert
of music by renowned Irish composer Shaun Davey, featuring piper Mark Redmond in
new work dedicated to the memory of Liam O’Flynn, is followed by a more ‘traditional’
season concert that includes Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring led by Mihhail Gerts.

In early October our Chief Conductor Jaime Martín
the numbers makes his debut in that role with Mahler’s Symphony
attending our live No. 3 in with mezzo soprano, Jennifer Johnston. Prior
to this Leonard Slatkin returns, for the first of two
events increased concerts this season, on Culture night, September 20,
significantly in 2017, 2019. Also making a welcome return in the second
and have been year of a three year accord is Maxim Vengerov who
will play Brahms Violin Concerto under the baton of
maintained in 2018”
David Brophy.

Conductors making their RTÉ NSO debuts include the exciting Venezuelan
conductor Diego Matheuz, Principal Conductor of the Simón Bolívar Symphony
Orchestra, JoAnn Faletta, Music Director of the Buffalo Philharmonic, Anja Bihlmaier,
Chief Conductor of the Residentie Orkest, The Hague, Mikhail Jurowski and Christian
Reif. Acclaimed international soloists appearing this season include Julia Bullock,
Viktoria Mullova, Gabrierla Montero, Alban Gerhard, and Denis Kozhukin.

The RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra places special emphasis on young talent
with amongst others Fiachra Garvey, Mark Redmond, Daniel Lozakovich, Ellinor
D’Melon, Martin James Bartlett, Daniel Kharitonov and William Thomas, winner of
the 2019 Veronica Dunne International Singing Competition. We are proud to give a
platform to Irish singers including Anna Devin, Ailish Tynan, Gavan Ring, Máire Flavin,
Sharon Carty, and John Molloy this season.

Our Towards 2022 strand continues with music by Boydell, Boyle, Stanford and
Davey, and we will premiere works by Hillborg, Kernis, Kinsella and Schnelzer, the
last a co-commission with Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra and the Gävle v

Symphony Orchestra. Among the large-scale symphonic works featured this season
are two Mahler symphonies, three Bruckner symphonies and works by Richard
Strauss and Maurice Ravel. The choral music of Elgar, Dvorák and Bach also feature.
We also pay homage to Beethoven in his 250th anniversary year. The Wizard of Oz,
Mary Black, and Apollo 13 complete the diverse mix of offerings for you to enjoy.

As always your feedback is most welcome.

Best wishes,

Anthony Long
General Manager,
RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra & RTÉ Philharmonic Choir
