INSTRUCTIONS
1. Attempt ALL questions

Question 1
(a). Define “power system stability” and differentiate the different types of system
stability studies. (5 Marks)

(b). From basic principles, derive the swing equation – an equation that describes the rotor
dynamics for a synchronous machine. (6 Marks)

(c). Extend the derivation of the swing equation to a multi-machine case, considering two
machines swinging coherently. Assume common system base. (4 Marks)

(d). A 50 Hz, four pole turbogenerator rated 100 MVA, 11 kV has an inertia constant of
8.0 MJ/MVA.

(i). Find the stored energy in the rotor at synchronous speed.

(ii). If the mechanical input is suddenly raised to 80 MW for an electrical load of 50 MW,
find rotor acceleration, neglecting mechanical and electrical losses.

(iii). If the acceleration calculated in part (ii) is maintained for 10 cycles, find the change
in torque angle and rotor speed in revolutions per minute at the end of this period.
(5 Marks)
Question 2
(a). Fig. Q2 shows a simple 4-bus system. Derive the admittance matrix for the system
from basic principles. (4 Marks)

(b). Briefly discuss the importance of load flow studies. (4 Marks)

Fig. Q2. Simple 4-bus System

(b). You are studying the electrical load in an area for purposes of supplying power to the
area.

(i). Discuss the key characteristics of the load that will be of interest for your study.
(4 Marks)
(ii). Explain the importance of load forecasting in power system planning issues.
[2 Marks]
(iii). Discuss the key parameters that drive load changes, both in the short term and long
term. [6 Marks]

Question 3
(a). A typical electrical power system comprises of the generation, the interface and the
load. The generations and the loads are distributed throughout the system.

(i). Discuss the factors that make the generations and the loads distributed throughout the
system.

(ii). Give your thoughts on the components that make the interface.

(iii). Classify the typical voltages that you would find in the electrical power system of a
modern nation. [10 Marks]

(b). The single-line diagram of Fig. Q3 shows a generator connected through parallel
transmission lines to a large metropolitan system considered as an infinite bus. The
machine is delivering 1.0 per unit power and both the terminal and the infinite bus voltage
are 1.0 per unit. Numbers on the diagram indicate the values of the reactances on a
common system base. The transient reactance of the generator is 0.20 per unit.
