CAESAR II: Smart Modeling

and Modification – Using Duplicate, Break and Rotate
Sometimes multiple elements have the same characteristics; it could be that they all
have the same restraints, lengths, or are all on the same slope. CAESAR II makes it
easy to create and modify models with similar characteristics. In this video, I follow
the situation where I need to update my model to slope a line of pipe that has already
been created. I show how to start the model from the beginning, adding the slope to
my elements, using the duplicate and break feature. Towards the end, the rotate
feature is used to modify the already existing model to have the slope, and also
changes the direction of the restraints, displacements, and uniform loads. Although
this video follows one situation, the features shown are useful to anybody who will be
creating or updating models with elements that have similar characteristics.
CAESAR II: Propagating
Properties
The properties that CAESAR II carries forward to following elements can be confusing.
This video shows which properties are being copied over to the following elements.
Uniform Loads, Wind/Wave loads, and Allowable Stress are also discussed, making
users aware of the different ways CAESAR II displays properties that have been
activated. The graphic settings for quickly viewing the different properties of the
model is shown. To make changes to the model, the list feature is also used to see
where changes are being applied to, as well as making quick changes throughout the
model.

CAESAR II – How To Add Displacements

This video discusses how to add displacements in CAESAR II. Displacements in CAESAR
II are sometimes not what you might expect. This video clarifies some misconceptions
of displacements. A simple cantilever beam example is used to display how
displacements affect the model. Other methods of using displacements are also
discussed, such as using displacements as an anchor, as a moving anchor, and
understanding fixed and free vectors.

CAESAR II – Expansion Joint Modeling- Calculating Stiffnesses

This video discusses how to input stiffnesses in the Expansion Joint feature.
Sometimes manufacturers do not provide all the needed information to model
expansion joints in CAESAR II; this video provides equations to calculate the
Translational and Bending stiffnesses. A quick overview of the Axial, Translational,
Bending, and Torsional stiffness is given. To verify accuracy, a comparison is made
between the Expansion Joint Modeler and the calculated stiffnesses.
CAESAR II – API 610 Nozzle
Limit Check
CAESAR II has the ability to do a “first run pass” per API 610 for piping loads and
moments. This video explains the correct way to use the Nozzle Limit Check in
CAESAR II. The following topics are discussed:
• Comparison Method
• Setting up the Reference Vector
• Explanation of Axis, Forces and Moments

This video also discusses how to read the API 610 files CAESAR II uses to compare the
loads and moments.
