 Armed forces College of Medicine values the health and wellbeing of students

and staff and is committed to providing a smoke free study environment. This
means smoking is not permitted anywhere within A.F.C.M buildings, grounds
or controlled vehicles.

A healthy and safe environment is everyone's responsibility.

Policy Statement
A.F.C.M is committed to providing staff, students, visitors, volunteers and contractors with a productive,
safe and healthy working and learning environment that protects all from injury, workplace-related illness
and potential hazards to their wellbeing. As part of the University’s duty of care all reasonable practical
steps are taken to identify hazards that could cause harm and to undertake, an evidence-based assessment of
the risk associated with the hazard.

Application of Policy
This policy applies to all people who enter University controlled property, facilities, premises and open
space including staff, students, visitors, volunteers, and contractors.
The University has adopted the following standards and expectations in the application of the policy:

 All University campus properties are tobacco free from --/ -- /20 -- .
 All persons on University premises and University open space are entitled to a Tobacco Free environment.
 In adopting a policy for the control of the hazard associated with tobacco smoke the University recognises that for staff
members and students the purchase and use of tobacco is not illegal.
 Smoking is prohibited at all times and without exception on all University premises, open space and in University
vehicles.
 All members of the university community share the responsibility of adhering to and enforcing the policy and have the
responsibility for bringing it to the attention of visitors and/or contractors.
 Smoking is prohibited in all internal and external (outdoor) areas within A.F.C.M Student Residences including all
Common areas, balconies, internal and external thoroughfares and stairwells. Taking into account student safety, there
may be designated sections of external Common Areas where smoking may be permitted.
 University work units which occupy buildings owned or operated by other organizations need to comply with that
organization's tobacco free (smoking) policy. In the absence of a policy, or if it is less stringent than the University
policy, then the University policy will apply.
 Smokers are responsible for disposing of their smoker’s litter in a responsible and appropriate manner.
 Advertising, sale, or distribution of tobacco is prohibited on A.F.C.M campuses.
 The University will not accept funds for research projects, grants, student scholarships or other material considerations
from the tobacco industry or related third parties.
 University officials, staff, advisors or other persons representing the University will not accept gifts or enter into any
arrangement, association or partnership with representatives of the tobacco industry, directly or indirectly.
 Companies that manufacture tobacco products are excluded from participating in campus careers fairs or other
vocational or recruitment activities.
Promoting Healthy Lifestyles
A.F.C.M’s Tobacco Free policy encourages members of the University community to adopt a healthier
lifestyle through assisting staff and students to give up smoking.
The University recognizes that some staff and students may require assistance to quit smoking. We
encourage those from within the University’s community who are considering quitting smoking to contact
Medical Centre if they are considering quitting.

Everyone can support A.F.C.M becoming smoke-free by:


 Understanding and observing the A.F.C.M Tobacco-Free Policy.
 Only smoking within the Designated Smoking Area or smoking off campus, whilst being considerate of campus
neighbors and the environment (with butt disposal).
 Respectfully and politely reminding people that A.F.C.M is smoke-free.

Smoke-Free Ambassadors; We Need You


Smoke-Free Ambassadors are needed to help increase awareness of changes to smoking restrictions and to
promote a smoke-free campus. Ambassadors are not enforcers of the policy.

Become A.F.C.M a smoke-free ambassador


Smoke-Free Ambassadors are staff and student volunteers who support A.F.C.M’s smoke-free activities by
increasing awareness of smoking restrictions and promoting a smoke-free environment.
Ambassadors provide positive, respectful and friendly messages to smokers that A.F.C.M is smoke-free.
Responsibilities of Smoke-Free Ambassadors

 Approaching people who are smoking on campus and informing them that A.F.C.M is smoke-free, which means that
smoking is not permitted anywhere on campus (with the exception of the Sydney campuses which have temporary
designated smoking areas).
 Handing out “smoke-free” postcards that reinforce the smoke-free message and provide the webpage for further
information.
 Providing information about support and resources to smokers who are interested in managing or quitting smoking.
 Promoting the smoke-free policy at key University events such as Orientation and Open Day.
 Reporting on smoking “hot spots” and issues arising from implementing a smoke-free policy.

Ambassadors will be provided with a one hour briefing session to increase their knowledge of the A.F.C.M
Tobacco-Free policy and increase their confidence in communicating the "smoke-free" message.
