ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

Any accomplishment requires the effort of many people and there are no exceptions. The report
being submitted today is a result of collective effort. Although the report has been solely
prepared by us with the purpose of fulfilling the requirements of the degree of Bachelor of
Technology in Civil Engineering, there are innumerous helping hands behind it who have guided
us on our way.

Our sincere gratitude goes to our faculty guide Mr. Nilesh Brindavan Mishra for his constant
guidance and encouragement during the course of project work. We wish to extend our heartfelt
thanks to all the subject teachers who have helped us to perform the task and be familiar to the
practical aspect and uses of theoretical knowledge. We are very grateful to our parents for their
encouragement and financial assistance.

ABSTRACT

The lands of India vulnerable to earthquakes and are classified into 5 zones each of them having
their own zone factor which let us know about the intensity of earthquake in the particular area
and how we should design buildings in such areas. Zone 5 covers the areas with the highest risk
of zone factor which means these areas suffer with high intensity earthquakes. In IS code the
zone factor for zone 5 is 0.36 while as zone 4 has a zone factor of 0.24, zone 3 has a zone factor
of 0.16 and zone 2 with a zone factor of 0.10. Since the current division of India does not use
zone 1 so no area are classified into zone 1. Analyses are carried out namely using STAAD. Pro
software. The load combinations are considered as per IS 1893(Part-1): 2002 for earthquake and
IS: 875 (part 3) for wind. Normally the buildings are designed with the help of IS codes and the
structure is designed for I seismic or for the I wind but there are no guidelines for the
combination of both that is combination of I seismic and I wind. In Delhi the buildings are
designed for wind only. The main objective of our project is to check the buildings for both wind
as well as earthquake and look after the fact that which will govern the design better earthquake
or wind load. The results are in terms of displacements for seismic effect on buildings as well as
for wind effect on buildings. It was found that in zone IV all the buildings analyzed are governed
by earthquake as the deflection in buildings are greater under seismic load as compared to that of
wind load.
