  soil amendment. Pastures and hay fields are good options.
Mercer Celgar will cover the costs of a qualified professional per-
forming soil sampling, obtaining government authorization and
delivery costs of Celgrow soil amendment based on access with a
large truck/pup combination. Acreage should be able to accom-
modate at least 6 truck/pup loads. The two major components of
Celgrow are individual wood fibres lost from the pulping process
and surplus bacteria from the wastewater biological treatment
facility. Wood fibres enhance soil moisture retention and bacteria
are a good source of soil nutrients. The landowner is responsible
for spreading and incorporating Celgrow into their soil.

iDIDaRide & Run
hits third year running...
Kaslo’s iDIDaRides event trail race will take place Sat-
urday, August 10, 2019 for the third year. Mountain bike
races of 40 km, 20 km and 8 km, as well as 20 km and 8 km
running races will occur. 230 participants have enjoyed
this event in its first two years, ranging in ages from five
to seventy plus!
The 40 km and 8 km starts are lakeside at the Kaslo Log-
ging Sports venue, while the 20 km events start at the end
of the airstrip (Winter in the Forest venue). All races fin-
ish at the Loggers Sports venue, where many participants
carry right through the finish line and into the lake!
The spectacular course will be basically the same as last
year, with the exception of the 40 km race which features
more trail – less road, on the first half of the route!
These races appeal to everyone with twenty percent of
entries here for the challenge and competition, eighty per-
cent come for the experience and participation and enjoy
exploring one of the greatest trail networks in the area.
Forty percent come from areas outside the West Koote-
nay – (as far away as Britain) and sixty percent are West
Kootenay local athletes. Our local group of 40 volunteers
will again be on hand to provide race day attention to the
entrants. Four aid stations with refreshments, fluids and
snacks will be provided over the 40 km course, two sta-
tions on the 20 km and one station on the 8 km loop.
On-site food and refreshments will be available, hosted
by the Kaslo Housing Society. After the races, participants
can take part in both a 60’s Snail’s PACE Race, sponsored
by PACE Electric and a Wheelie competition sponsored
by Kaslo Automotive (Keeping the Wheels of Kaslo Turn-
ing). $100 goes to first place in each of these contests. Even
if you aren’t participating, you will want to watch these
highly entertaining races... last year the Snail’s PACE was
especially memorable as it came down to two preteens
and one highly skilled adult, who put on an outstanding
endurance and balance clinic.
The awards ceremony for all races will be held after
these two events and the day will end with a civic party at
the Logger Sports venue for participants, volunteers and
both travelling and local fans. Enjoy our renowned local
beer and live music by the Block Heaters – transplants
from Saskatchewan and famous throughout the land.

World War II veterans honored
2019 marks the 75th Anniversary of D-Day and the Bat-
tle of Normandy. The BC/Yukon Command of the Royal
Canadian Legion branches have been involved in hosting
and facilitating commemoration events since the begin-
ning of this year.
“This year marks a special year for generations affected
by World War II. Our World War II veterans are reduc-
ing in number, but their honored sacrifice will remain with
us forever,” said David Whittier, Executive Director of the
BC/Yukon Command. “While being a veteran myself and
going overseas several times, there is a certain reverence
when in the presence of our World War II veterans.”
Several branches across BC have participated in D-Day
commemoration events, bringing people from diverse
backgrounds together to celebrate and learn more about
Canada’s involvement in D-day. BC/Yukon Legion Mem-
bers provided the color party for the launch of Veteran
Affairs Canada ‘Boots Across Canada’ event on March 29
at Pacific Central Station in Vancouver. Many WWII vets
attended a Veterans Tea at Government House recently,
hosted by Premier Horgan. Branches have chosen to initi-
ate their own commemorative events in remembrance of
those that stormed Juno Beach and fought in the Battle of
Normandy. Several BC, World War II Veterans travelled to
Halifax to take part in Veteran Affairs Canada’s ceremony
on June 6, 2019.
“We are keepers of remembrance and as we continue
commemorations, we must look and listen to our younger
generations to pass on our proud traditions. It is our duty
to honor the sacrifices made by men and women who have
served, those who are currently acting in service to our
great country and at this time, our World War II veterans.”,
said BC/Yukon Command President Glenn Hodge. “Mem-
bership is open to all citizens and we encourage community
members to join their local legion and participate in build-
ing Canada’s legacy of diversity, vibrancy and strength.”

Community spirit fuels
new playground
With the tremendous efforts of close to fifty dedicated
community volunteers, the students and staff at W.E.
Graham Community School in Slocan now have a newly
installed playground.
The rain or shine installation turned into a three day
work party over the May 24 – 26 weekend for the towns-
people of Slocan, who brought their wheelbarrows, shov-
els and enthusiasm. The event even became a reunion for
some folks, like custodian Craig Roussian, who remem-
bered installing the original structure 30 years ago when
his children attended the school.
“The music and muffins kept the people going!” said
Dayna Fidler, PAC President at WEG, who helped orga-
nize additional sponsor Save-On-Foods to donate sup-
plies towards a barbeque to feed volunteers both days.
After several years of fundraising attempts to update the

old playground equipment in Slocan, the Parent Advisory
Committee at the school was overjoyed with the news of
Ministry funding in 2018 to build a new play structure on
school premises.
The $90,000 provincial grant awarded took the pressure
off parents to continue campaigning for this project spe-
cifically. Efforts included extensive grant writing, creating
videos and soliciting online votes in various competitions
to try and raise playground funds. Additional funds and
CUPE staff resources were provided by the Kootenay
Lake School District to disassemble and remove the old
playground structure. By relying on volunteer labour
to install the new equipment, more of the funds went
directly towards the new equipment components.
“The parents worked in groups and put it together like
a puzzle.” explained Principal Mike Hurley. Blue Imp
Inc., a Canadian playground manufacturing company
was chosen by the parent-led committee following a
year of collecting input from families and students as to
what kind of playground equipment they most wanted.
“Swings were at the top of the list,” said Principal Mike
Hurley, expelling the myth that swings were not allowed
on school premises any longer. “All the kids are enjoying
it, even the older kids are hanging around a bit more!”
And they are not done yet! Plans for a pump track are
in the works, as well as ideas been generated around land-
scaping to provide more shade and seating for parents
and grandparents. “We want to continue to make it more
inclusive for everyone that comes to enjoy it.” said Fidler.

a large renovation or a
small remodel, life may
be turned upside down
during the project. Fur-
niture may be moved out
of the room, walls may be demolished, water or electricity
may be turned off and appliances may be missing or not
hooked up. Home improvements often drum up dust and
disarray. Such projects can try the patience of any home-
owner and things may get worse before they get better.
Even though remodeling can be taxing, the end result
is often worth it. Here’s how to look forward to the silver
lining and come out unscathed.
Discuss The Project Before It Starts: All family members
should be in agreement before the first hammer is swung.
Decide on as many details as you can ahead of time and
have a firm plan in place. Establish backup choices for
tiles or colour schemes in case the items you want are
out of stock. Trying to make decisions under duress may
result in bad choices.
Do One Project At A Time: It’s tempting to want to
improve as much as possible at once to maximize motiva-
tion and renovation materials. However, having no place
in which to escape the mess can elevate stress levels. Do
not think about renovating kitchens and bathrooms all at
once, or you will not have any working fixtures for tasks
like washing up.
Have Everything In Place: Before demolition even
begins, have building materials bought and stored, con-
tractors and subcontractors lined up and see what you can
do to minimize the time workers need to spend in your
home.
… But Expect Delays: In a world where things move at
lightning speeds, renovations have not gotten the memo.
Home projects take lots of time and will likely take longer
if you are doing the work yourself in your free time. Build
lots of extra time into the project so you are not disap-
pointed when delays happen – even when you’ve done
your best to avoid them.
Plan An Escape Zone: Construction environments can
be messy, loud, smelly and a host of other unsavoury
adjectives. The chaos that ensues when life is turned
upside down can be overwhelming, particularly for the
person who spends the most time in the home while work
is being done. Build escape moments into the plan and
make sure everyone else at home is on board. During the
real grind of the project, a night or two at a hotel may be
a welcome respite.

Seven high school students are participating in the Youth
Explore Trades Sampler.
Program offers clarity for
high school students
The push to start high school students on a rewarding career in
the trades has been bolstered with a program aimed at presenting
the array of choices available at Selkirk College.
The Youth Explore Trades Sampler (YETS) is currently under-
way at Nelson’s Silver King Campus. Seven students from LV Rog-
ers Secondary and Mount Sentinel Secondary are experiencing
what the trades-based Selkirk College facility can offer. The stu-
dents started their hands-on sampling of the trades in February
and will wrap up with 16 high school credits by June.
“The trades sampler is fantastic for those students who are
not sure what they want to do,” says Brent Firkser, trades train-
ing coordinator & innovative learning services district teacher for
School District #8. “Getting a breadth of knowledge gives these
students a taste. It’s kind of like a buffet at a restaurant where you
get to try everything on the menu, so that the next time you go you
can decide if you just want to have the steak. This way they can get
exactly what they want.”
The YETS program is targeted at students in Grades 10 to 12 and
is a new province-wide initiative hatched by the Industry Trades
Authority (ITA). High school students interested in trades get
the chance to spend 300 hours on campus in five different shops
and finish the semester with a month long on-site practicum in a
field of their choice. Participants get full graduation credits for the
semester that would be equivalent to taking four classes at their
high school.
The students currently enrolled in the program based in Nelson
spend time with Selkirk College instructors in the newly refur-
bished carpentry, welding, millwright/machinist, electrical and
metal fabricator shops.
“It really helps to set them up for success when they get to the
foundation program they choose,” says Rob Schwarzer, chair of
Selkirk College’s school of industry & trades training. “They will
have a very good idea of whether that specific trade fits with what
their goals are and something they want to pursue as a career.”
Students who take the YETS program in Grade 10 or 11 have
a chance to then take a full foundation program in the trade of
their choice through the Youth Train in Trades program. Both the
YETS program and Youth Train in Trades program are paid for by
the provincial government, no post-secondary tuition is charged
to the student.
For Grade 12 students who take the YETS program, they have
the chance to enter a foundation program after high school gradu-
ation. “The idea behind it is for students to get a sense of what
trade would be a good fit for them. Within the program there is a
lot of hands-on work and projects,” says Schwarzer.

The skills learned in all the shops, combined with the certifi-
cations and familiarity with a variety of trades, sets students up
for more lucrative summer job opportunities to go along with the
ultimate pursuit of the trade of their choice.
For students interested in pursuing a career in the trades, both
YETS and Youth Train in Trades can provide the perfect head start
on completing a Red Seal certification. The key to taking advantage
of the opportunity is to start thinking about it early. “If you want
to take this pathway, then you really need to plan it out correctly,”
says Firkser. “If you do that then it’s totally possible to spend your
last year and half of high school at the college starting your career.”

Alex J Ewashen
February 21 1932 - May 20 2019
Alex Ewashen was born in Nanton AB. The eldest of four, he
was raised as a Doukhobor on a farm north of Lundbreck AB.
The pacifist belief of toil and peaceful life were dear to his
heart. At age 8 or 9 he bought a batch of Valentine’s cards, rode
his horse to neighbouring farms and sold out. Thus began
his career as a salesman. In 1963 Alex received his diploma
from the Western College of Auctioneering in Billings, MT.
Shortly after, he and Julie were married. Following the birth
of their daughter Alexandra the family moved to Creston BC.
Their son Brian was born here during an auction.
Thursday nights at Jual Auction was a weekly event for many
in Creston Valley and the bi-annual antique auctions drew
customers from across Canada and the US. Eventually Jual
Furniture was born, which later became a United Furniture
Warehouse franchise.
During the Cold War Alex travelled in Europe as a member
of the Peace and Friendship Caravan International. In 1987
he travelled to Asia with his business partner, Gabe Dudas.
In 1995 he and Julie travelled across Canada, to the United
Nations and on to Russia. Alex was singing in the choir,
Voices for Peace. This was to celebrate the 100th anniversary
of the Burning of Arms in Georgia. Travels to India, Mexico
and across North America followed.
Alex was a member of the Lions Club, the Jaycees and the
NDP. He gladly donated his auctioneering skills for charitable
fund raisers, the last on March 9, 2019 when he sold a pie for
$135.00. It was donated back and resold for $50.00. In 2014
Alex published his autobiography “Rags to Riches —MY
WAY”
Alex was predeceased by his parents Alex and Mary Ewashen,
his stepmother Anne and his sister Abbe. He is survived by
his wife Julie, his children Alexandra (Bob), Brian (Laurel),
foster daughter Cindy (Ray); his brothers Bob (Enid) and
Larry; grandchildren Jacob, Natasha, Rebecca, Sara, Hannah
(Jay), David (Julia) Devon; great grandchildren Aiden, Riley,
Silas, Effie; nieces, nephews and cousins along with their
families and many wonderful friends.
