A LESSON PLAN

HEALTH

1) LEAD-IN (2-3 minutes):

Stress and anxiety are common experiences for most people. I am sure you are quite familiar with
the topic yourselves. During today’s lesson we will discuss some stress factors and we will focus on
the techniques that can be used in order to manage our stress level.

Our plan for today is to do some listening tasks but we will also have a little discussion connected
to the topic. Let’s begin with some warm-up activity, and then we will do the listening part of our
meeting, then, we will watch a short movie about stress management and have a little chat
connected to the topic.

Thanks to this lesson, students will know basic vocabulary connected to the topic of stress and
stress management. Also, the lesson focuses on the listening and speaking skills.

2). WARM-UP ACTIVITY (up to 10 minutes):

Keep talking
Aims Skills - speaking; Language - all elements; Other — improvisation, flexibility, imagination
Level Intermediate/advanced
Organization Individuals
Preparation Slips of paper with both a sentence and a topic written on them
Time 5—10 minutes
Procedure: A student chooses a slip of paper and has to talk for one minute about the topic,
beginning with the sentence on the piece of paper.
Examples:
Smoking If a cigarette cost £l a lot of people . . .
Homesickness When I was a little boy/girl,. . .
Pets I used to have .. ./I would like to have .. .
Parents There are no certificates for good parents.
Clothes I like . . . etc.
Variations The topic and sentence cards can be prepared by the students.
Remarks This activity can be used to revise topics that have been dealt with in class.

3). Listening from TASKS 1-3 (15 minutes):

First, we read all the statements for each activity. Then, the recording will be played twice for each
exercise. After every exercise we discuss it together in class.
4). SPEAKING ACTIVITY (15 minutes):

(Instead of TASK 4 from the worksheet.) The students are provided with the vocabulary list
connected to the topic (the list attached). The teacher plays a short video clip (the link below) and
ask the students to enumerate the stress management techniques that were mentioned in the video.
Additionally, students are asked to add their own techniques using the items from vocabulary list
they are provided with. Then, they are asked to discuss them with their partner.

5) Homework assignment. (2-3 minutes)

In order to revise the vocabulary items the students are asked to write a short story (half page long,
Times New Roman 12) using the terms provided on the list.

6). Test: Vocabulary match-up test

Test attached.

Aims of the lesson: developing the knowledge of vocabulary; developing listening skills;
developing speaking skills.

Comments:

The main aim of the lesson is to develop students’ listening and speaking skills. Not every task
from the worksheet was used, however we believe that the task with a short video clip would be
more engrossing for the learners and it develops listening and speaking skills simultaneously.
Additionally, it is an opportunity to teach them some new vocabulary items connected to the topic.
As there can be a problem with understanding a short movie for some students, the Polish subtitles
may be displayed. Also, the discussion should be carried out in pairs as not every student wants to
speak in front of the whole class, but they should have an opportunity to practise their speaking
skills.
