A Content’s Value

Words, articulating into a sentence and introducing a new world. A world outside of your
reality, your normality, and your truth. A book is not just simply paper and ink, although it is on
the surface. A book is an opportunity to know about an event through someone else’s perspective
rather than your own.
Why then, are so many people not interested in reading? Why do they associate books
with boredom? It can possibly be because of the writing style. Reading is understanding
someone else’s thoughts and morals expressed at the turn of a page. As a reader, you have to find
which perspective you’re diving into when reading.
Others might say that it’s confusing. This statement can be justified when you read long
college texts or court cases. But stepping away from that, in general, reading for fun. Picking a
book that you like. As adults, because reading isn’t prioritized, people don’t think it’s an
important activity to continue doing. Only when they are forced to read, do they see it a s a chore
and as a burden.
Mary Wortley Montagu says that “No entertainment is so cheap as reading, nor any
pleasure so lasting.” Reading has to exciting to the reader. Therefore, the story plot of the text
has to be interesting. Whether it’s realistic fiction, sci-fi, or fantasy, the plot and the purpose has
to be engaging. It should offer the reader something to look forward to. I remember reading “The
Mostly True Story of Jack” by Kelly Barnhill. The story plot of the book was a twist to the tale
of Jack and the beanstalk. It was about a boy who was an actual beanstalk and it was an
interesting read. Taking a classic and changing the focus to the main character Jack, was what
made the book intriguing.
View points are crucial in literature. The way you receive information is based on
perspective. Personally, I prefer reading a book written in first person than a narrator, because
reading is trying to understand, and i would love to understand the character’s emotions. By
having the character voicing their thoughts and knowing their actions, you become closely tied to
the story. Writing in third person is done for the purpose of describing secondary characters. This
takes away the focus of one specific character. However, i’ve read some books where the author
will switch the pov for background information. In doing this, the difference of character ties
into the story setting and events that will lead to the climax.
The evoking of an emotion gives reason for you to continue reading. You won’t read a
book that doesn’t spark up any interest or emotional connection. If you think about it, your
favorite book has made you feel some type of way. Reading a sad book is very interesting to me,
because sadness is like an umbrella. There are so many aspects to create the feeling of sadness
and it can impact the reader. It doesn’t just have to be a death. So how does a text summon the
need for feelings? The answer can be found in the description of the details. Important, because
visualizing the story is critical in understanding the further meaning of the book. The language
has to be descriptive but not confusing. Even if there are big words, the text can’t be choppy.
Many books are praised for certain scenes, lines, or settings. These important aspects play a
component to the popularity of a best seller.
What makes a text worth reading is the story plot, the point of view, and describing
details. These three elements help set a criteria for a text being worth the read, because it
broadens one’s mind to know the direction and purpose of the author, it is attractive, and the
supporting details paints a picture for the reader to end up loving the book.
