“We are still a very repressed
segment of society and for a lot of
people it takes a lot of courage to just
be out as an open LGBTQ person,”
Koontz said. “I think having pride in
who we are and being able to celebrate
that is important. And for me personally
seeing how much persecution and hate
is still being thrown at our community,
I think it’s important to stand up for
who we are and show that we’re not
ashamed of being who we are.”
Koontz is the first transgender
person to win an election in the state of
Georgia.
