Award Scholarships Due to the success of last year’s scholarship fundraisers, the support of the community and the generous support of the Navidad Valley CattleWomen (NVCW) 5K Ranch Run sponsors, CattleWomen awarded $6,000 in scholarships at their last business meeting. All applicants were high school seniors from Fayette, Colorado and Lavaca counties with an interest in agriculture. One Colorado county recipient was Samantha Wick of Weimar High School who will be attending Texas State and is interested in becoming a physical therapist. She is involved in her family’s cow-calf operation and was active in FFA. Caleb Murrile attended Shiner High School and will also be attending Texas State with hopes of becoming a high school biology teacher. Caleb has been a volunteer previously at the CattleWomen 5K. Gretchen Kuck was selected from La Grange High School. She will be attending Texas A&M. Her family has been in agriculture for three generations and she has an interest in working in the world food organization. Another winner was Madison Etzler from Sacred Heart High School. She will be attending Texas A&M Kingsville and is interested in becoming a large animal veterinarian. Also interested in becoming a veterinarian was Page Pavlu. Page attended Columbus High School and will now attend Texas A&M. Finally, Brent Sitka attended Hallettsville High School and will use his scholarship as he starts his college education at Blinn-Texas A&M. He plans to pursue a degree in agriculture and wants people to recognize the importance of agriculture in supplying people with food and jobs. The Navidad Valley CattleWomen, a local chapter of the Texas Cattlewomen, is a non-profit organization that supports and promotes the beef industry. CattleWomen are presently planning the next 5K Ranch Run which will be held on August 6 in Schulenburg in conjunction with the Schulenburg Festival. To register, runners or walkers can go on-line to http://getmeregistered.com/NVCattleWomen5K or contact Susie Shank at 979-820- 8964. The Navidad Valley local works to support local youth with scholarships and provide quality information on the industry and how to incorporate beef into a healthy diet. Additionally, they work to support the community with targeted outreach projects that include a beefy twist. Cattlewomen function collectively to inform consumers of the importance of the industry and of the contributions it makes to the economy of our nation.
