LESSON PLAN IN SCIENCE AND HEALTH VI

I. OBJECTIVE:
Identify conditions when the effects of materials are harmful.

II. SUBJECT MATTER:

Conditions when the harmful effects of materials are harmful.

A. Science Ideas/Concepts:
 When such as firewood, gasoline, and other fossil fuels in motor
vehicles are burned gases are released into the air and formed acid
solution known as acid rain that reduce fertility of the soil and
corrode stone buildings and statues made of lime stones.
 Forest fires and burning of garbage release excessive amount of
carbon dioxide into the air that prevent heat from escaping in outer
space resulting to greenhouse effect.
 The ozone layer protects the Earth from the harmful effects of the
sun’s ultraviolet rays. The thinning of the ozone layer is caused by
chlorofluorocarbons or CFC’s. CFC’s are contained in hair sprays, air
conditioners, refrigerators and other man-made machines. Thinning
of ozone layer means getting in touch with ultraviolet rays. Too much
exposure to ultraviolet rays that causes sunburn and skin cancer.

B. Science Processes Stressed:

Identifying, Observing, Inferring

C. Materials:
Chart, flashcards, pictures, activity cards, diagram of acid rain,
greenhouse effects and global warming, and ozone layer.

III. DEVELOPMENTAL ACTIVITIES:

Teacher’s Activity Pupil’s Activity

A. Pre-Activity:
1. Science News:

- Do you have any idea about - Yes ma’m

Climate change?
- What is climate change? - Climate change is a long term
change in the Earth’s climate,
especially a change due to an
increase in the average
atmospheric temperature.

- Many attempts to save the world from

global warming by removing carbon
dioxide from the atmosphere but other
factories continue burning fossil fuels
that is why they can’t prevent the ocean
from dying as a result of a build-up of
acidity.
- What is the news about? -The news is about climate change.
- What condition may happen due to - The condition that may happen
climate change? happen due to climate
change is global warming.

2. Science Word Drill:

- Let us read the following science words. (They will read the
following science words)
 Acid rain
 Chlorofluorocarbon
 Greenhouse effect
 Global warming

3. Motivation:
(Showing picture of vehicle emitting smoke)

- Who can describe what is on the picture? - A vehicle emitting smoke.

- Could these practices affect us? - Yes ma’m
- How about to our environment? - Yes ma’am
-
(Showing picture of factory emitting smoke)
- Who can describe what is on the
picture? - A factory emitting smoke.
- Could these practices affect us? - Yes ma’am
- How about to our environment? - Yes ma’am

(Showing picture of woman burning garbage)

- Who can describe what is on the

picture? - A woman burning garbage.
- Could these practices affect us? - Yes ma’am
- How about to our environment? - Yes ma’am

4. Presentation:

- Our topic this morning/afternoon is to

identify conditions when the effects of
materials are harmful.
- Do you want to know what are these - Yes ma’am
condition?
- Let us discover the different conditions
when the effects of materials are harmful.

B. Activity Proper:
1. Group pupils into three.
2. Setting of standards for group work.
3. Distribution of activity cards and materials
4. Activity proper(by station)

C. Post Activity:
1. Reporting:
- Group reporters repot your answer. (They will report their works.)

2. Discussion/Analysis:
STATION 1
- What kind of gases are released when - T he gases that are released fuels are
burned? are CO2, sulfur oxide, and
nitrous oxide.
- What is formed when gases combine - Acid rain is formed.
with vapor in the air?
- What do you think will happen to the - Acid rain washes away valuable soil and
crops? topsoil, reduce fertility of
soil and decrease production of
crops.
- What do you think will happen to the - They will die.
plants and animals?
- What do you think will happen to the - Acid rain contaminates water supply
when acid rain falls? the water.

STATION 2
- What do forest fires, smoke from - Carbon dioxide
the factories and burning of garbage
release into the air?
- Can it facilitate heat from escaping
into outer space? - No ma’am

- What happens when heat cannot

escape into the outer space? - The heat is trapped and goes
back to the Earth that cause the
rise.
- When there is so much heat, what is - Global warming
experienced around the world?

STATION 3
- What are the materials that contains -Hair sprays, air conditioners,
refrigerators and chlorofluorocarbons? other man-made machines
.
- How does it affect the ozone layer? - Thinning of ozone layer.

3. Generalization/Abstraction:

- Based from the activity, what are the - Global warming

conditions when the effects of - Acid rain
materials are harmful? - Greenhouse effect
- Thinning of ozone layer

4. Application:
- You and your family went shopping
in the SM city. At home you found out
that you have lots of plastic wrappers
and plastic bottle from the things you
bought.
- How would you dispose these things - By recycling and in an
environmental friendly way? making it usable.
- What should you do avoid the -Avoid burning of plastic
conditions caused by the harmful garbage, lessen use of materials
effects of the materials? that can cause the global
warming, acid rain
and greenhouse effect and
thinning of ozone layer.

IV. EVALUATION:
Direction: Match column A with column B. Column A are the harmful effects
of the materials. Column B tells the conditions when the materials become
harmful. Write the letter of the correct answer on you answer sheet.

A B
1. Acid rain A. The ozone layer is destroyed
by freons from air conditioners
