Does using smartphones make people more or less connected?
In our smartphones, most apps are social media apps such as Twitter,
Facebook, Instagram, Tinder, and etc. For most people, they use their
smartphones to connect with their friends in social media with the use of
direct messages in any social media app but for some, they use it for
entertainment purposes such as watching movies, scrolling through our
feeds in Facebook or Twitter. The use of smartphones may make you feel less
connected to your family & friends depending on your gender or phone
habits. Researches from Kent State University surveyed around 493
students. The study shows that women are vulnerable to be addicted to their
smartphones than men since women spend an average time of 365 minutes
while men spend an average time of 287 minutes. The reason why women
use their phones most of the time is that it is connected to their emotions and
feelings which is associated with their family and friends. It does depend if we
are more connected or less connected.
If the purpose to use your smartphones is to connect with your family
and friends then you are still connected. Otherwise, if your purpose is to keep
yourself entertained, to isolate yourself, and to not be bothered by anyone
then you are being less connected from your family and friends. Our
smartphones may be helpful but dangerous to our mental health, especially
with the internet. Social media is full of various cultures and different
personalities which is also called society. Full of different opinions and
perspectives which can also lead us to use our smartphones more such as
taking time to write something or read something just because it is so
interesting. In general, it all depends on you. Smartphones may be a big help
for us but it can also be a major backfall.
