 CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

According to the International Labor Organization the number of part-time

workers has increased from one fourth to a half in the past 20 years in most developed

countries including the United States. The financial of education fees are rising due to the

increasing price of tuition fees, school fees, and other expenses from school their families

tend to face financial problems particularly on managing the budget for food, electricity

bills, water bills, education and other financial bills. If their family unable to afford all

those expenses. Aside of those facts, students will be affected by the financial problems

that was being experienced therefore students decides to work while studying. They work

either part-time or a full-time in order for them to help their parents in their daily

expenses and to their personal use and needs.

A part-time job is from the word “free time” it is not necessarily that they spend

their time in working this is a form of employment that carries fewer hour per week than

a full-time job, it may have short time shifts or longer shift depending of what type of

job they have. Having a part-time job while studying is not that easy because they have to

weigh studying and working it depends on how they will manage their time considering

their job and their academics. They tend to be focused in school in order for them to

reach their goals in life. Students may be tired of working but still need to study because

at the end it is going to be worthy.

 However, the impact of part-time work on the student experience shows that there

are both positive and negative aspects to the practice. Students often complain about their

financial situation and getting a part-time job can fix it. Having a part-time job of a

student can be able to gain money from their work and learn on how to handle their

finances carefully. They need to earn money so that they can afford their own needs such

as expenses from school. Students having a part-time job while studying will have less

free time than to those non-working students. Those working students must develop their

time management skills between working and studying. The tight schedule will help them

to understand the real value of time and spend it wisely. Aside from this, it also gives the

students a chance to gain some work experience which can enhance their skills on

working and it may lead into bigger opportunities to them in the future.

Having a part-time job for students have also negative effects to them especially

to their academic performance wherein they have less time for school activities, prepare

and review lessons. According to the Association for Supervision and Curriculum

Development (ASCD), in a study of more than 12,000 students in grades eight through

12, found that as students work more hours, their grades decline. Those students who

works with a high number of hours per week are can start to have a lack sufficient time to

study or complete their assignments, and at this point their grades begin to suffer.

Tiredness and stress from the extra workload may also impact student performance.

Furthermore, they may not focus on their studies which may result to get a dissatisfying

grade. In a study conducted by Gorgulho, one of the main complaints among working

students is that they find themselves without enough time to eat right and if these poor

eating habits continue this will increase risk of obesity.

 This research aims to determine the types of part-time job that ACLC GAS 11

students usually find and to know the reasons why ACLC GAS 11 students finding a

part-time job by giving them a questionnaire that was being answered by those students.

Aside of this, the researcher’s objective is to determine the effects of having a part-time

job to the ACLC GAS 11 students.

 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This research aims to determine the impacts of having a part-time job to the

ACLC GAS 11 students from morning and afternoon shifts that they have encountering.

Specifically, it aims to answer the following,

a. What are the types of part-time job does ACLC GAS 11 students usually find?

b. What are the reasons why students from GAS 11 must work while studying?

c. How having a part-time job affects the academic performance and lifestyle to

the GAS 11 students in ACLC?

 SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

The study focus on the positive and negative effects of having a part-time job and

the reasons why students must work while studying. The main location of the study will

be ACLC Naga and the most target respondents would be the working students from

GAS 11 morning and afternoon shift. The researcher will explain and enlighten the mind

of the readers for them to understand the clearly this study. The study wants to make

people aware of the situations and effects on working of students while studying.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This research can be a source of information about students who are working a

part-time job while studying. This study is beneficial to the following persons:

For students who are working while studying should be aware of the situations

and effects on working while studying that they must be encountering. Not only to those

part-time workers students but also onto those students who are focus only in studying or

the non-workers students need to be inform on what will be the effects of engaging in

work while attending the school.

Faculty members served as the second guardian of those working students. They

will be able to understand the situations being faced by the students having a part-time

job. By this, they can help them to cope up with their studies.
 Parents are the people who are always along with of most of the students. They

are the persons whose students most intimated with. They may also benefit with thus

research for them to become aware about the impacts of students having a part-time job.

They may help and can enlighten their mind to continuously support and give their fully

attention to their children.

 DEFINITION OF TERMS

FINANCES. It is something has to do with money. It is how much money they're making

or losing. The main reason why they need to work because of the rising finances from

school fees and expenses for their daily needs.

SHIFT. It is one of two or more periods that occur again in which different groups of

workers do the same job in relay. It is either morning or afternoon shift and it was depend

on what type of job they have.

WORKLOAD. It is something the amount of work to be done by someone.

WEIGH. It something needed to be balance wherein the importance of that something

was compare to another.

SUFFICIENT. It something that was enough to meet the needs of someone.

OBESITY. A condition of being fat of a person that can get if diet cannot maintain.
