Teenagers in Indonesia today face the lack of responsibility.

They take things for

granted and only enjoy what their parents can provide. Without them realising, parents
do play a big role in inhabiting this character in their children as they indulge their
children with overmuch attention, comfort and kindness. Consequently, it will harm the
character of a teenager by being treated too leniently. For instance, getting an aid of a
helper has become increasingly common in Indonesia. A lot of households hire helpers
to help their daily lives. To a child, one might perceive this as an ordinary thing and fail
to properly appreciate the job of a helper. Teenagers in Indonesia are being freed from
chores and also their responsibility. The lack of responsibility in teenagers will give a
detrimental effect in their character development as they are unprepared to take control
of their lives as an adult. Therefore, teenagers today will grow up with less resilience.

Next, teenagers in Singapore today are incapable of facing challenges in their

lives. Parents tend to pave the way for their children as they take control in many
aspects of their lives. Moreover, parents take away the challenges that teenagers today
are supposed to face themselves. The act that parents do out of love to protect their
teenagers today from hardship might just have made them ‘soft’. As a result, teenagers
who have been pampered by their parents in Singapore today grow up without a sense
of conviction. As an illustration, in some cases, some parents do not take it when their
teenagers are being scolded by their teacher until they attract a lot of medias into it.
This shows how the act of parents can prevent the development of a teenager by
indulging them which makes them less resilience.

Differently, in Western countries such as the U.S., teenagers are provided with
room that allow them to develop resiliance. Generally, parents show their careness and
love through the freedom that they provide to teenagers. It is common for teenagers in
the U.S. to take part-time jobs for them to earn extra money. Other than that, chores are
also included as a basic responsibility for a teenager in western countries. These simple
actions positively impact the character development of teenagers. However, when it is
taken to the extreme, it is possible for this freedom to be abused. For instance, the rate
of free sex among teenagers in the U.S. is by far higher than the numbers in Asian
countries. Hence, giving freedom to teenagers might be a double edged sword as it can
also give rise to a rebellious behaviour and a lack of resilience among teenagers.
