MIDTERM EXAM
NEEDLECRAFT

1. WHAT IS NEEDLECRAFT?
Needlework is decorative sewing and textile arts handicrafts. Anything that uses
a needle for construction can be called needlework.[1]Needlework may include related
textile crafts such as crochet, worked with a hook, or tatting, worked with a shuttle.
Similar abilities often transfer well between different varieties of needlework, such
as fine motor skill and knowledge of textile fibers. Some of the same tools may be used
in several different varieties of needlework.

2. EXPLAIN THE IMPORTANCE OF needlecraft?

The teaching of basic needlework skills came to be seen as a way of improving the
social conditions of the poorer classes by promoting domestic thrift and opening job
opportunities for females.

3. GIVE AT LEAST 5 TYPES OF NEEDLECRAFT THAT ARE COMMON IN THE

PHILIPPINES AND EXPLAIN EACH TYPE.

Quilting is the process of sewing two or more layers of fabric together to make a thicker
padded material, usually to create a quilt or quilted garment. Typically, quilting is done
with three layers: the top fabric or quilt top, batting or insulating material and backing
material, but many different styles are adopted.

Embroidery is the craft of decorating fabric or other materials using a needle to

apply thread or yarn.
Embroidery may also incorporate other materials such as pearls, beads, quills,
and sequins. In modern days, embroidery is usually seen on caps, hats, coats, blankets,
dress shirts, denim, dresses, stockings, and golf shirts. Embroidery is available with a
wide variety of thread or yarn color.

Crochet is a process of creating fabric by interlocking loops of yarn, thread, or strands

of other materials using a crochet hook. The name is derived from the French term
crochet, meaning 'small hook'.
Knitting is a method by which yarn is manipulated to create a textile or fabric for use in
many types of garments.
Knitting creates multiple loops of yarn, called stitches, in a line or tube. Knitting has
multiple active stitches on the needle at one time. Knitted fabric consists of a number of
consecutive rows of intermeshing of loops. As each row progresses, a newly created
loop is pulled through one or more loops from the prior row, placed on the gaining
needle, and the loops from the prior row are then pulled off the other needle.
Tatting is a technique for handcrafting a particularly durable lace from a series
of knots and loops.[1] Tatting can be used to make lace edging as well as doilies, collars,
accessories such as earrings and necklaces, and other decorative pieces. The lace is
formed by a pattern of rings and chains formed from a series of cow hitch or half-
hitch knots, called double stitches, over a core thread. Gaps can be left between the
stitches to form picots, which are used for practical construction as well as decorative
effect.
