Instruction – fracture testing

1. Scope
This instruction specifies the procedure for fracture testing of test
pieces in connection to welder qualification testing in steel, ISO 9606-
1.
Fracture tests can be applied to material thicknesses of > 2 mm.
Testing shall be done at room temperature (23 ± 5° C)
NOTE: According to ISO 9606-1, fillet welds can also be evaluated
using macro testing. This testing method is not described in this
instruction.

3. Extraction of test pieces

Normally the entire test piece is tested (sufficient pressure capacity is
required). If the test piece requires splitting, ensure that it is done at an
even spacing along the testing area. Samples may be removed through
thermal cutting or mechanical machining.

4. Preparation of test specimens

If the test piece is to be tested without dividing it into smaller pieces,
notches can be made on each side using a cutting disk. These notches
should be maximum 20 mm deep, and must not interfere with the
testing area.
If necessary, notches can also be added to the middle of the excess
weld metal using a cutting disk. The notch must not be too deep. At
least 80% of the original weld cross section must remain (see figure 1).

5. Testing equipment
Testing may take place in a hydraulic or mechanical press. The
equipment must have the necessary capacity to complete a fracture test
of the test piece.

6. Conducting the test

The test is performed by placing the test piece in the press between the
fastenings and the presses (see figure 2).
The weld in the test piece is then fractured by gradually and
continuously applying pressure until the upper and lower plates are
parallel to each other (see figure 3)

7. Evaluation of test results, acceptance criteria

After fracturing, the weld surfaces must be examined (this refers to the
testing surface area). Full penetration of the entire testing surface area
must be demonstrated. In general, no discontinuities are allowed that
exceed quality level B according to ISO 5817.

8. Documentation
The examiner verifies the results of the protocol for monitoring and
testing in welding tests.
