Analyzing Multiple Interpretations

Lesson Components: Description:

Curriculum content name, Eleventh/Twelfth Grade Level

Number, RL.11-12.7

and description: Analyze multiple interpretations of a story, drama, or poem (e.g., recorded
or live production of a play, recorded novel or poetry), evaluating how
each version interprets the source text.

Learning Objective: The student will be able to distinguish specific differences between the
types of interpretation. The student will be able to analyze why they
interpreted the story differently from the people in the video. The student
will be able to infer and describe the reasoning behind why the video
portrayed the story the way they did.
Learning Activities: The students will be watching a video on from Teacher Tube showing
another interpretation of the story the students have already read. The
video shows puppets acting out the story line and providing their own
thoughts on the story. While the students watch the video, they will fill
out a graphic organizer.

Activity 1: Video
The students will watch a video of puppets acting out the story, Macbeth.
The video will help students to experience another type of interpretation
of the text from their own.

Activity 2: Graphic organizer

The students will fill out a graphic organizer over the different aspects of
interpretation of the text. The first section of the graphic organizer will be
filled out before the video begins for them to explain their own
interpretation. The next three sections will be filled out throughout the
video to help the students describe the videos interpretation. The last
section is made so that students can create their analyze between their
interpretation and the video.

Activity 3: Class Discussion

The class as a whole will have a group discussion once the graphic
organizers are complete. The students will use what they have wrote
down to participate in the conversation. The class will discuss: students’
initial interpretations, the videos interpretations, and the differences
between the two.

Assessment/evaluation: The students will be evaluated based on their participation in the group
discussion and their completion of the graphic organizer. I will check to
ensure every student fully completes their graphic organizer and
understands the differences in the interpretations. During the class
discussion, I will make sure every student works to analyze what they
interpreted.
