Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Microsoft PowerPoint is a tool that supports UDL learners in the following ways:
● Audio components like text-to-speech and slide narrations within the program supports auditory
learners.
● ELL students can access the translation feature within the program.
● Students with spelling difficulties can use the Spell Check feature to check their PowerPoint before
they share it.
Lesson idea implementation:
The teacher will introduce the lesson by doing a basic tutorial of how to use the Microsoft PowerPoint
program. Students should know how to insert pictures, change fonts, and record the narration for their
slideshow. Teachers should also writing both the upper and lower case letters of the alphabet as a visual for
the students while they work on computers.
The students will be instructed to open Microsoft PowerPoint on their computer. They will be given the
instruction to create an alphabet book (letters A-Z). Their alphabet book should include a title page that
includes their name and a picture. Each slide should include a letter of the alphabet with a word that starts
with that letter and a picture as a visual representation of the word (i.e. A is for Apple and a picture of an
apple). The students will also narrate their slideshow through the “record slideshow” feature in the
PowerPoint program. The students should be given multiple classes (if needed) to finish their alphabet books.
When every student is finished, all of the students will present their alphabet book to the class. The teacher
should address creative words and pictures within student presentations and give credit for creativity,
Reflective Practice:
With this lesson, students should be exposed to a wide variety of words and visual representations. To further
extend this lesson, the teacher could use the Microsoft Word program to create a class dictionary in which all
of the students words are listed along with a visual representation. More words and pictures should be added
through the year to see the progress in word acquisition the students are making.
