In his new paintings, Nara continues to present his familiar images of a single figure that he's
continued to refine. Relying on the thinner quality of acrylic paint compared to oil, Nara creates
each painting by adding and removing pigment until he reaches his desired effect: a canvas
made up of suspended hues that allows the figure to emerge through layers of color, inviting the
viewer to stand still and enter a moment of contemplation. For his works on paper, Nara presents
a more narrative approach. The lively pencil lines capture moments and figures, all in an
expressive style experimenting with light, shadow, stillness and movement.

Irwin, who began his career in the 1950s as a painter and became a pioneer of the L.A.-based
Light and Space movement in the 1960s, has, through a continual breaking down of the frame,
made art that is "conditional," responding to the context of its specific environment. He employs a
wide range of media, ranging from fluorescent lights to fabric scrims, colored and tinted gels,
paint, wire, acrylic, and glass. But Irwin notes the medium of his fluorescent works, for instance,
as "Light + Shadow + Reflection + Color"-displacing emphasis away from the materials
themselves, and drawing our attention to the act of perception itself.

Yto Barrada - Tree Identification for Beginners

Tree Identification for Beginners is dedicated to Barrada's film-and-performance of the same title.
The work was originally commissioned by Performa 17 and premiered in New York in November
2017. Tree Identification for Beginners revisits Barrada's mother's 1966 trip to the U.S. on a State
Department-sponsored program, Operation Crossroads Africa, aimed to convince African
students that "the U.S. is a vital society worthy of sympathetic or at least serious consideration."
The film combines a stop-motion animation of Montessori toys and grammar symbols with the
organizer's perspectives on the Africans' attitudes and behavior, and her mother's account of the
trip. This artist's book expands on the film by reproducing archival materials related to the 1966
program. It includes the students' individual and group evaluations, national news reports on the
students as they traveled the country, and Barrada's mother's recollections. There is also an
introduction and artist interview by curator Adrienne Edwards, who originated the project at
Performa 17.

Mark Tobey

While a contemporary of the Abstract Expressionists, Tobey developed a unique and often
calligraphic style, grounded in a place of mindfulness rather than the physical action of his
contemporaries. A spiritual and artistic turning point for Tobey occurred in 1918 when he was
introduced to the ecumenical Baha'i Faith, which promotes universal consciousness. Working
largely in water-based media, such as tempera and gouache, on modestly-scaled canvases and
paper, Tobey began a painting by emptying his mind of extraneous thoughts in order to focus
exclusively on the meticulous placement of abstract gestures and shapes. Within his tablet-size
paintings, suffused with masses of lines and overlaid with fragmentary forms, Tobey captured
universes of possibilities and energy. In discussing his practice, Tobey said: "I believe that
painting should come through the avenues of meditation rather than the canals of action. Only
then can one have a conversation with a painting. If I find no content, there's no communication."

Agnes Martin - Navajo Blankets

Featuring a selection of paintings created by Martin throughout her career, together with
exceptional Navajo handwoven textiles from the 19th century, this exhibition catalogue illuminates
the parallels between these exquisitely crafted and transcendent bodies of work. Most of the
woven works in the exhibition were created in the form of the "chief-style" blankets by Navajo
women working on indigenous vertical looms in their homes. Developed beginning in the 1750s,
this bold-banded style worn around the shoulders by both men and women became a popular
object of trade to high-level members of other tribes, military officers, and travellers throughout
the American West, Southwest, and Northern Plains.

While Martin took no direct inspiration from the aesthetics of Navajo weaving in her approach to
painting, she spent much of her life in New Mexico, and the region's cultural history and artistic
production suffused her experience. By placing these two bodies of work in dialogue with one
another for the first time, the exhibition encourages the discovery of their compelling resonances
and invites new appreciation for their respective emotional impact and contributions to our shared
visual culture.

Richard Pousette-Dart : Works 1940-1992

Richard Pousette-Dart was the youngest member of the first generation of Abstract
Expressionists; the artist, along with several of his important contemporaries, took part in the
formative meeting of Studio 35 and is included in the iconic 1950's Irascibles photograph. In
1951, Pousette-Dart moved with his young family to Rockland County where a small artistic
community had formed. This meant that although he was an influential member of the New York
school his remove allowed him to continue to develop and maintain a unique methodology and
style.

The artist's relative longevity provided him the time to expand upon his earlier work, developing a
mature body of work rooted in his mysticism, symbolism, and spiritual beliefs. As Philip Rylands,
Director Emeritus of the Peggy Guggenheim Collection states, in the catalogue, "He engaged
with one of the highest aspirations of the twentieth-century avant-garde: to paint a dimension
inaccessible to photography. Others painted the fourth dimension, states of mind, consciousness
per se, swift motion, or the passing of time, but Pousette-Dart painted the world of the spirit."

Adolph Gottlieb - Classic Paintings

The exhibition focuses on two major images from Gottlieb's later work: Bursts and Imaginary
Landscapes. In the early 1950s, Gottlieb began to further pare down his compositions resulting in
horizontally oriented Imaginary Landscape paintings, such as the 7-by-12-foot work Groundscape
(1956) included in this exhibition. Observing that the "all-over" motif that he had begun to utilize in
1941 had become a common element of American abstract painting, Gottlieb radically
compressed his image to the mutually opposing dual registers of the Imaginary Landscape. In
these paintings, the composition is divided into an upper and lower horizontal area, each one
characterized by different painting techniques to yield seemingly opposing emotional material,
while the paintings ultimately balance as a complex single image.
