changing water levels can conceal submerged hazards, particularly in shallow water near the shoreline.

Moving forward and giving back

Little did Nyle Mulkey Chose’s parents Susan Mulkey
(Kaslo) and Lars Chose (Nelson) know how deeply their
son had touched his community until after he died tragi-
cally in an automobile accident in March of 2017. He
was 30 and had been passionately pursuing his dreams,
working in forestry during the summer months and as a
backcountry snowboarding guide in the winter. He had a
contagious smile and a fire in his belly, was quick to laugh
and the first to lend a hand.
Within weeks of Nyle’s death, people made a point of
letting his parents know what a positive difference he had
made in their lives and how much they wanted to keep his
spirit alive. So, last year, in honour of Nyle, the Nyle Mulkey
Chose Bluebird Day Foundation (NMCBDF), a not for
profit society, was formed to sponsor young people in the
West Kootenay to develop their skills in the backcountry.
There was an overwhelming response to the first fundraiser
and the society raised enough money to start the process of
obtaining charitable status, as well as being able to sponsor
five individuals who are now furthering their education in
avalanche safety and backcountry guiding certification.
In April, the NMCBDF held its 2nd annual fundraiser
and the board of directors along with Nyle’s parents were
again humbled by the outpouring of love and support.
Numerous organizations and individuals donated items
for the silent auction and the Baldface staff, Nyle’s friends
and coworkers bidded up for the cause!
As the foundation moves forward, it will continue to
honour Nyle’s memory each year by giving back to the
community and enabling young people to advance their
backcountry skill development and training.

Wanted: harlequin duck sightings in
Salmo River watershed
If you’re lucky enough to see harlequin ducks in the
Salmo River watershed then wildlife biologist, Mar-
lene Machmer, wants to hear from you. With fund-
ing from the Fish & Wildlife Compensation Program
(FWCP) and Pandion Ecological Research, the Salmo
Watershed Streamkeepers are doing a harlequin duck
pair and brood inventory from May to July.
A 1996 harlequin duck inventory in the watershed
recorded a significant breeding population of 54 adults,
with 33 males and 21 females. “An FWCP survey in
1999 first documented a decline in adult numbers and
then a resurvey in 2009 confirmed a 22% reduction in
the adult population,” said Marlene. “Habitat degrada-
tion and increased disturbances have likely played a
role in the decline and other impacts – including the
March 2019 fuel spill in the South Salmo River – put
additional stress on this population.”
Sightings are sought from the public to assist in
focusing inventory and stewardship attention on
active sites and in detecting oiled birds. To report
sightings of harlequin ducks in the Salmo River water-

Harlequin ducks are sea ducks that overwinter on the
coast and migrate to the interior to breed. Their ability to
swim in turbulent white water, where they dip and dive
for aquatic insects, is unmatched. For breeding, they
select undisturbed portions of rivers and streams with
dense riparian vegetation. Females return to their natal
streams annually and breed in the same areas, unless the
sites become degraded or disturbed. They’re sensitive
indicators of healthy freshwater ecosystems.
The FWCP is a partnership between BC Hydro, the
Province of BC, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, First
Nations and public stakeholders to conserve and
enhance fish and wildlife in watersheds impacted by
BC Hydro dams. The harlequin duck project is one of
38 projects being funded, for approximately $5.8 mil-
lion, by the FWCP across its Columbia Region in 2019

Measures in effect now
Stage 1 Water Conservation Measures go into effect
automatically each year from June 1 to September 30 for
all Regional District of Central Kootenay (RDCK) water
systems. There are four stages and stricter measures may
be required if demand increases significantly, hot and dry
weather prevails, or if reservoirs decline to critically low
levels.
Stage 1 Water Conservation Measures include:
• Watering of lawns (including new lawns), gardens, trees
and shrubs ONLY between the hours of 7 pm to 10 am.
• Watering using drip irrigation, a watering can and or
hand held hose is permitted at any time.
Stage 2 Water Conservation Measures are also now in
effect for the Riondel Water System only, effective immedi-
ately, due to the tendency for low water levels in the reser-
voir in the summer months. For Stage 2 measures, watering
of lawns (including new lawns), gardens, trees and shrubs
is permitted ONLY between the hours of 6 am to 10 am and
8 pm to 10 pm.

Three Salmo Secondary students
were in Vancouver earlier this month
to accept a prestigious digital media
award. Grade 8 Music students;
Bailey McNeil, Shayde Oswald and
Darius Weeden were treated to an
all-expense paid trip to the coast to
attend the DigiMusic 2019 Electronic
Arts event to accept their award.
The contest challenged BC high
school music students to combine
creativity and technology and sub-
mit a sound track for a short video
game or animated movie clip. This
province-wide competition, funded
by the BC Government, aims to pro-
mote the talents of dedicated music
students and aspiring young com-
posers. Contest entries were judged
by an expert panel.
