Maths Plan Year 2/3 Shape and Angles

Carmen Pinker Wattle 3 2019 Term 2

Unit Aim: To provide students with the mathematical vocabulary, content knowledge and practical hands-on experience to describe and identify a range of 2D shapes and
3D objects and to identify and describe angles in the world around them.

Curriculum Descriptors addressed

Year 2:

 Describe and draw two-dimensional shapes, with and without digital technologies (ACMMG042)
 Describe the features of three-dimensional objects (ACMMG043)
 Identify and describe half and quarter turns (ACMMG046)

Year 3:

 Make models of three-dimensional objects and describe key features (ACMMG063)

 Identify angles as measures of turn and compare angle sizes in everyday situations (ACMMG064)

Year 2’s then complete their workbook lesson 6.2 at their
desks with Mrs Foster’s assistance. They can then access
Prodigy on the iPads

Year 3’s bring pencils and erasers to the floor to work on 6.3
together.
When complete the Year 3’s can access Prodigy on the
iPads. Year 2’s then complete the tessellating patters
challenge sheet.

5 Year 2: Shape Tessellation Patterns and Prodigy. 6.4 Replay sheet x 13 for Year 2’s.

from Mrs Foster. They can then access Prodigy on the iPads.
When the Year 3’s are ready for iPads Year 2’s can use shape
blocks to make tessellating patterns. At the bottom of the
page students write a sentence about what they did to see if
a shape will tessellate.

Year 3’s to complete 6.4 with assistance on the mat.

Problem solving not to be attempted as it is too advanced
for this group. They can then access Prodigy on the iPads.

Warm Up: Review Graffiti for 3D shapes. **Add 3D related words and
posters to word wall***
Play animation for Year 3: 6.5 Identifying 3D shapes followed
by Year 2: Identifying Features of 3D shapes. Discuss
including vocabulary. Discuss some 3D shapes using net
blocks.

Year 2’s then complete their workbook with assistance from

Mrs Foster. When finished they can use whiteboards to
practice drawing 3D shapes using blocks as models.

Year 3’s to complete lesson 6.5 in their books with problem

solving to be modelled on the board. 6.6 to be completed
with assistance.

with cards attached underneath. Early finishers can have a
go at constructing their own net using grid paper.
Year 3’s to complete lesson 6.7 in their books. They can then
have a go at constructing a 3D shape from a net. Katelyn,
and Alex to access Prodigy on iPads if preferred due to fine
motor issues.
