CHAPTER 3

Methodology
Research Design

This research will be using a non-experimental correlational as the research

design since this study will try to examine if there is a significant relationship between
family financial problems and student’s academic performance. In using a non-
experimental research design, the variables are not manipulated or controlled by the
researcher so this study will be unbiased. Also, there is a broad observation in the
variables that occur naturally and does not introduce external variables.
Sample Population

The respondents of this study are the grade 12 ABM students only and their total
population is 315. For this study to be valid, the researcher will be using the Slovin’s
Formula, n=N/1+Ne2 ; wherein n is the number of samples and N is the total population
and e is the margin of error.
Instrument

This study will be conducting a survey for its data collection instrument for this
study. The questions in the questionnaire of this study will be coming from some
questionnaires from different theses in order for the survey to be valid.
Statistical Treatment

In order to obtain the intended outcomes, which will be analyzed and interpreted
on Chapters 4 and 5, the researcher will employ Pearson Correlation Coefficient or
Pearson’s R. It is a statistical method for measuring how well two variables are related.
The formula for Pearson’s R is as follow:
