(ESSB4154)
JANUARY SEMESTER 2019
This assignment carry 40% of the carry marks. Please do it individually and it must
be TYPING FORM

Main Campus students:

Do submit the hard copy during class time on W9 (week 9) and submit the softcopy

Regional Centre students:
Please submit the hard copy to your tutor to be marked and submit the softcopy at
UNIEC on the same date (or before) W9.

ASSIGNMENT QUESTIONS:

1. Construct an ungrouped frequency distribution table for the following data set:
{1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 2, 2, 4, 5, 9, 8, 1, 3, 2, 3, 8} (2 Marks)

2. Construct a grouped frequency distribution table for the data below. Find the
midpoint, class limit, class boundaries, frequency and relative frequency for each
class. (10 Marks)

55 32 44 60 90 45 42 62 85 38
77 41 87 77 91 50 80 53 72 74

83 39 37 71 82 79 51 87 25 91
34 87 38 26 39 90 88 22 33 82
3. The table shows the distribution of scores or 40 students on a Mathematics test.

Score 10-12 13-15 16-18 19-21 22-24

Frequency 4 6 13 9 8
i. Estimate the mean score obtained on the test. (1 Mark)

ii. Estimate the probability that a student selected at random would score at
most 15 marks on the test. (1 Mark)

iii. Using the scale of 1 cm to represent 1 unit on the frequency axis and 2
cm to represent 5 units on the scores axis, use graph paper to draw a
frequency polygon to represent the distribution of scores shown in the
table. (10 Marks)

4. Probability is the mathematical term for the likelihood that something will occur,
such as drawing an ace from a deck of cards or picking a green piece of candy
from a bag of assorted colors. Discuss the FOUR (4) relevant examples of real
life probability. (16 Marks)
