Second Semester 2008-09 (082)
Homework # 1

Due Saturday March 14.

1. A quart of SAE 30 oil at 68 oF weighs about 1.85 lb. Calculate the oil’s
specific weight, mass density, and specific gravity.

2. A liquid compressed in a cylinder has a volume of 1000 cm 3 at 1 MN/m2

and a volume of 995 cm3 at 2 MN/m2. Estimate its bulk modulus.

3. The temperature and pressure of oxygen in a container are 60 oF and

20.0 psig, respectively. Determine the oxygen’s mass density if
atmospheric pressure is 14.7 psia.

4. A large plate moves with speed V o over a stationary plate on a layer of

oil (thickness = d). If the velocity profile is that of a parabola, with the
oil at the plates having the same velocity as the plates, what is the
shear stress in the moving plate from the oil? Can you calculate the
shear stress on the lower plate?
HINT: develop an expression for V as a function of y.

5. Estimate the height to which water at 70 oF will rise in a capillary tube

of diameter 0.120 in.

6. Two clean, parallel glass plates, separated by a distance of d = 1.5

mm, are dipped in a bath of water. How far does the water rise due to
capillary action, if  = 0.0730 N/m?
