Self-Test- Exam II
Question Sheet – No notes, No calculators, you have 53 minutes

Problems 1 through 5 (4 points each - partial credit is possible): Complete the free body
diagrams on your answer sheet for the systems shown below. Label each force or couple you
add and specify the direction of any force that is not horizontal or vertical to the page. Friction
and weight are to be neglected. Do not attempt to enforce equilibrium, except that two-force
bodies must be drawn to be trivially in equilibrium for full credit.

6) A beam AB of weight W is lifted over a ledge as shown as shown in the figure. A rope connects
the beam a B to a block at C. The weight of the block is Q. Complete the free body diagrams
on your answer sheet, neglecting all friction. Do not
attempt to enforce equilibrium. Label each force you add Q
and specify the direction of any force that is not horizontal B
C P
or vertical to the page. (4 points - partial credit is possible)
7) Now consider there to be a friction force between the q
beam and the corner of the ledge and between the block
and the ground. Add these forces to your free body A W
diagrams. Choose the directions carefully! Do not make
any assumptions on whether the system is static, kinetic or
motion is impending. (4 points - partial credit is possible) For Problems 6 - 8

8) Based on your free body diagrams and given s as the coefficient of static friction at all contact
points, write the equation(s) that apply when the system is in the state of impending motion.
(4 points - partial credit is possible)
Problems 9 and 10 (2 points each). List all the two-force members in each of the systems
shown by specifying the members' end points (e.g. AB). If there are no two-force members,
then answer "none".

Problems 11 and 12 (2 points each - no partial credit). The beam shown below has a constant

Problems 13 and 14 (2 points each - no partial credit). The beam shown below has a linearly
varying force per unit length applied, from zero at A to w0 at C and a constant w0 between C
and B, as shown. It is replaced by an equivalent force P at a x distance from point A. What is
