P&G Social Commitment Report

P&G focus their social investments and employee engagement on a single
global cause: P&G Live, Learn and Thrive. Through this global cause, it is
improving life for children in need. In fact, because of this focus, P&G has
already improved life for more than 150 million children in need around the
world.

P&G Live, Learn and Thrive comes to life through more than 100 programs in
over 50 countries around the world. P&G is improving life for millions of
children every year through Live, Learn and Thrive:

Live - Safe drinking water, nutrition, and hygiene programs are helping
children get off to a healthy start.

Learn - Schools are being built and supplies provided to children lacking
access to education.

Thrive - Skills for life are being nurtured, including self-esteem and
independent-living skills for disabled children.

P&G has initiated and been involved in a number of community programs

that benefit individuals in need whilst providing employees the opportunity
to take part in community building events.

Goal – By 2012: Enable 300 million children to Live, Learn and Thrive and

Water Program.

Live
Pakistan ranks 136th out of 177 on the United Nations Human Development
Index. It has a population of 166 million, of whom more than half are
children. Infant mortality stands at 73 per 1,000 live births, and neonatal
mortality at 53 per 1,000 live births.

The main causes of death in children are: diarrhoea, malnutrition, acute

respiratory infections and vaccine preventable diseases. Vaccination
coverage rates are improving but still less than they should be.

The major problems being faced by the health sector in Pakistan:

• Inadequate primary health care

• High rates of population growth

• Prevalence of communication diseases

• Inadequacy of funding and trained manpower

• Lack of mass awareness in health

The concept of ‘Live” within the Live, Learn, Thrive platform aims to help
ensure a healthy start for those children who are in need by:

• Helping prevent disease

• Providing access to preventative health services

• Educating children and mothers on adopting healthy habits in order to

enable children to disease-free, healthy lives.

Children’s Safe Drinking Water Program

More than 4,000 children die everyday from diseases caused by drinkling
unsafe water. This program is P&G’s corporate signature program for Live,
Learn and Thrive. P&G uses small packets or sachets to disinfect water,
working like a mini-water treatment plant. P&G’s has established a PUR plant
in Hub, Pakistan; the first of its kind in the world. It provides safe drinking
water and is able to export millions of litres across the globe.

PUR exports to Denmark, Australia, India, Chad, Congo, UAE, Dominican

Republic, Malawi, Ethopia, Uganda, Kenya, Indonesia and Haiti.

Khawabon Se Aagey Campaign

It was launched by P&G in December 2007 in partnership with the Pakistan
Medical Association. P&G brands have donated to provide life saving
equipment for newborn babies to 22 hospitals across Pakistan. Training
programs were also conducted by qualified senior paediatricians for hospital
staff including doctors, nurses and midwives on neonatal resuscitation as
well as the effective usage of the donated equipment.

Ariel – Help The Needy

Medical equipment was donated to 30 institutions for disabled children all
over Pakistan based on empty Ariel bags collected during a promotion
period.

Pampers
The Pampers team of professionals educated new mothers in hospitals about
the nutrition, immunization and development needs of their newborns, whilst
striving to work towards improving baby health-care practices across
Pakistan. Launched in 2000, this program has reached 2.3 million mothers
across Pakistan.

BabyCare Mobile Clinics

Established in 2003, in order to reach mothers in their homes as 85%+ births

take place at home. This program has reached over 3.3 million mothers in
Pakistan to date.

Sahara For Life Campaign

Established in 2007 by pampers in partnership with Abrar-ul-Haq and Sahara

for Life Trust with a vision to improve child health in Pakistan. This campaign
resulted in the donation of over 1 million doses of life saving medicines.

Pampers – UNICEF: One Pack = One Vaccine Campaign

It has so far donated approximately 800,000 vaccines to help save the lives
of newborn babies and mothers across Pakistan. Pampers has committed to
helping UNICEF and WHO raise over 200 million more vaccines globally
which will help UNICEF in supporting countries to eliminate tetanus across
the world.
Safeguard Sehat-o-Safai Program
Safeguard’s mission is to instil outstanding hygiene habits in children. It was
established in 2004 in partnership with Pakistan Medical Association (PMA)
and the Infectious Diseases Society of Pakistan (IDSP).

It has empowered over 5 million children in 14,000 schools across Pakistan.

15,500 health days celebrated in schools nationwide.

Always Education Programs

Launched in 2003, the program runs in thousands of schools and colleges for
girls in Pakistan, and has educated 4 million girls about good health and
hygiene habits important for young girls.

The Always Mothers Education Program has educated over 600,000 mothers
on how to help their daughters to cope with the changes they face as they
grow up.

Global Handwashing Day

Global Handwashing Day, celebrated on October 15th, is a global awareness
effort, attempting to educate individuals on the significance of hand washing
with soap as an effective measure to prevent diarrhoeal diseases from which
close to 250,000 children die in Pakistan alone.

P&G’s Safeguard team was selected to lead Global Handwashing Day in

Pakistan in 2008.

Safeguard, working with its partners, enabled over 700,000 children to wash
their hands with soap and imparted health and hygiene education to them.
Learn
The picture of literacy in Pakistan is grim. The overall literacy rate is 49%,
while only 36.8% of girls are literate.

A number of studies of the education system in Pakistan have revealed that

the quality of education being provided by primary schools in the country is
poor, with many schools lacking adequate teachers and resources.

Poverty is also a big hurdle in education. According to UNICEF, 17.6% of

Pakistani children are working and supporting their families.

The concept of ‘LEARN’ seeks to enable children to learn by providing access

to places and tools for learning. In Pakistan, P&G has provided access to
education to thousands of children ranging from large urban cities to the
isolated northern reaches of the country.

Keeping the HOPE Alive

It is an initiative in which P&G Pakistan has partnered with Health Oriented
Preventive Education (HOPE), to provide informal education to children in
their own neighbourhoods for free. P&G Pakistan has set up a system of 60
informal schools spread across Karachi and Thatta, providing primary
education in the homes of trained teachers. More than 2000 children are
studying in these P&G Hope Schools.

Objectives:

• Setting up and fully supporting P&G Hope Primary Home Schools in Sindh.

• Ensuring high retention rates at formal Hope Schools, through P&G

employees sponsoring a child’s education for a year.

• Enabling provision of better education to the P&G-HOPE students through

regular teacher trainings

• Enabling children to thrive in life through regular educational and fun-filled

out-of-class trips and by building the children’s confidence through regular
interaction with P&G employee volunteers.

Safe Schooling for Building Futures with READ Foundation

Development Foundation) to build seismic compliant schools in the
earthquake-affected areas of Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

students and awarding scholarships for orphans. In 2008, P&G inaugurated a
second school with READ Foundation in the remote village of Lamnian near
Muzaffarabad benefiting another 250 students.

neighbourhood of Islamabad at Bhara Kahu. The school will provide primary
level education to 225 disadvantaged boys and girls and will be fully
equipped with furniture, modern teaching & learning aids and sporting &
recreational resources.

Thrive
The concept of ‘THRIVE’ aims at providing children in need access to
programs that help develop self-esteem and build skills for life.

P&G and its employee volunteers have initiated several programs to enable
children in need in Pakistan to thrive. Whether the children are physically,
mentally or socially impaired, all THRIVE programs attempt to improve the
lives of children everyday.

P&G Home at SOS Children’s Villages

P&G Pakistan has recently launched a long-term partnership with the SOS
Children’s Villages of Pakistan, with a vision to providing homes to promote
the well-being, learning and development of life skills for orphans.

This project is P&G Pakistan’s first long-term community relations initiative in

orphan-care. P&G recently commemorated the launch of this partnership
with the groundbreaking of the first P&G Home in the SOS Children’s Village
to be built in Islamabad. This home will house 10-12 orphaned children, and
will take two years to complete.

Employee Volunteerism at P&G Pakistan

P&G Pakistan encourages and facilitates employee volunteerism. Employees
volunteer their time, effort and skills in building confidence, communication
skills and fuelling creativity within children benefiting from the ‘Keeping The
Hope Alive’ and ’Safe Schooling For Building Futures’ projects. Employees
have also had a chance to volunteer their time for diversified causes such as
educating children at a children’s cancer ward in Jinnah Hospital and
spending time with deaf and blind children.

At times of crises, employees are also engaged through donations (where

appropriate and possible), which are then matched by the company.

In 2007, 15 employee volunteers took 200 P&G-HOPE children on an

educational tour of the PAF. In 2008, 18 P&G employees took 110 HOPE
children studying at the P&G-HOPE Thatta schools on a fun-filled educational

Association's Children Cancer Ward.

More than 30 P&G volunteers dedicated their Saturdays to spending time
with children from the school, painting their faces with bright, colourful
