QUESTION: Cyberbullying is on the rise these days. Why is cyberbullying such a

serious problem?

Today we are all wired to the Internet and technology. The Internet has
opened a world of opportunities, as well as new dangers for society. One such
danger is a new way of bullying called cyberbullying. We cannot deny the fact that
there are many serious problems connected to cyberbullying.

Cyberbullies may spread rumours or lies about someone, which can damage
the victim’s reputation. Cyberbullies often pose as someone else in order to try
and make their victims say something embarrassing. You can never know who is
there on the other end sending you threatening messages.

The faceless Internet makes it easier for people to hide their identity. It
allows anybody to commit mean and unkind actions without being identified. This
encourages bullies to use the Internet to engage in harmful behaviour. Another
main problem related to cyberbullying is that anyone can be a cyberbully or a cyber-
victim. Hence, cyberbullying is more harmful than traditional bullying. Children,
teenagers and adults can become victims of digital bullying. The Internet allows
anybody to commit mean and unkind actions without being identified.

In short, cyberbullying is a serious problem because it damages the victim’s

reputation, while it hides the bullies’ and victim’s identities. Cyberbullying should
not be taken lightly.
