INTRODUCTION

IMPORT AND EXPORT OPERATIONS

The expanding economy and business opportunities have caused companies to export and
import products to develop their business. International shipping remains daunting for many
new or relatively inexperienced exporters, particularly small and medium-sized firms.
Effective use of transportation equipment and modes reduces shipping and logistics costs.
However, export and import planning entails all sorts of considerations, from inventory levels
and manufacturing lead times to customers' preferences and transportation options. Ocean
export is generally much cheaper than air export, but the transits from warehouse dock to
consignee door are measured in weeks instead of days.

Airfreight is suitable for perishable goods; it may also include light, high-value commodities
such as semiconductors and electronic components essential to running industry or fulfilling
an inventory shortfall and unexpected consumer demand. Ocean cargo often includes goods
such as automobiles, toys, and household appliances and items whose bulk, weight, and
steady consumer demand allow slow transportation.

INLAND CONTAINER DEPOT

ICD means Inland Container Depot situated at inland points away from sea ports.

ICD is a term used in India in the field of Imports and Export of sea shipments. ICD is
formed to help importers and exporters to handle their shipments near their place of location.
If the sea port is away from the places of importers and exporters Inland Container Depot
(ICD) helps them to save time and money in the procedures and formalities.

In Inland Container Depot (ICD), a combination of services of sea custodian, customs

department, carriers, freight forwarders, customs brokers etc. are carried out to facilitate
exporters and importers for smooth handling of cargo.

WAREHOUSE

A warehouse is a planned space for the storage and handling of goods and material. Its main purpose is to keep

the goods for the longer time and whenever there is a demand for the product, it will be supplied as fast as

possible and reaches the customer in its original position

Abstract:
Inside the walls of the warehouse, the utilization of every component—space, people, inventory and
equipment—will impact the bottom line in profound ways over time. Warehouse Management enables us to
analyse these components continually, so we can conserve effort, fill orders faster and more accurately, save
space and reduce inventory.

Warehouse Management:
Warehouse Management provides the insight into your inventory and the warehouse management tools to

WAREHOUSE PROCESS

14
Picking strategies and Equipment
We examine the different types of picking strategies available to warehouse managers
and the types of equipment used for storage and picking.
There are a number of dimensions to the picking process.

Handling Storage Picking Hardwares &

Equipment Method Operations Softwares
• Forklifts • Bulk/ Floor • Paper Pick • RFID Scanner
• Reachstacker Storage • Pick by lable • CFS
• Pallet Handlers • Racking • Voice Picking Management
(Hydraulic) • Mezzanine floors • RFID- Automatic
• Hand Carts • Strong Room Scanning • MIS
• GOH • Mobile storage
• Temporary
storage

15
Warehouse processes: Despatch and Beyond

They examine the remaining processes within the warehouse. These include value-adding
services and despatch, together with the peripheral but essential tasks of stock counting
and housekeeping. They also look at security measures that can be taken within the
warehouse.

Value-adding services:

These value-adding services include the following:

1. (Re) labelling

2. Pricing

3. (Re) packing

4. Bundling

5. Reconfiguration

6. Sub-assembly

7. Repair and refurbishment.

8. Fumigation

9. Palletisation and Pallets

Indirect Activities:

There are many support activities that occur in warehouses and are crucial to the efficient
operation of the warehouse. These activities include:

 Managing the allocation of labour for value-adding services.

 Ensuring optimum space utilization.
 Monitoring work flow and congestion.
 Provision, allocation and maintenance of equipment.
 Identification and replenishment of fast-moving items.
 Identification of non-moving stock.
 Stock integrity and dealing promptly with non-conforming, lost or found stock.
 Managing cycle counts and organizing full stock checks.
 Security of high-value or hazardous stock.
 Ensuring the cleanliness of the warehouse and the safety of both staff and visitors.

16
Stock management:
Inventory or stock management and warehouse management tend to be two very distinct
roles. Warehouse managers are in a position to advise their inventory colleagues on levels of
safety stock and the specific movements and characteristics of particular stock items.

Security:
Security of product within the warehouse is paramount. The warehouse man-ager is
responsible for the integrity of all the products under his or her care, whether they are owned
or stored on behalf of other companies as a third-party contractor. This can be achieved
through good housekeeping, the use of security cages and carousels for storage, and through
vigilance by staff.
The core attributes of security within a warehouse are as follows:
 Appropriate recording of inbound and outbound products;
 Authorizations for all despatches;
 Accurate audit trails;
 Regular stock checks;
 The use of appropriate storage equipment
 Vigilance
 Intrusion Alarm

Documentation:

 Advanced shipping notice

 Manifest
 Shipping labels
 Bill of Lading
 Commercial invoice
 Shipper’s export declaration
 Export packing list
 Certificate of origin
 Export licence
 Inspection certificate
 Insurance certificate

17
Warehouse Costs

The cost of operating a warehouse can average between 1 and 5 per

cent of total sales depending on the type of company and the value of
its goods.
Warehouse managers require a comprehensive knowledge of all costs
and cost drivers within the warehouse as they are under significant
pressure to reduce costs yet continue to produce optimum customer
service with the added pressure of reduced inventory. Managers are
also expected to contribute data to the company budget and
continually reassess the resource and cost budget in line with the
actual operation.

Types of costs:
The costs typically associated with a warehouse operation are shown
below:

1. Space costs:
 Rent/leasing costs on building/land and building depreciation
(depending on how the building and land has been acquired)
 Insurance

2. Direct labour costs (fixed): warehouse operators

 Wages including on-costs
 Personnel insurance
 Safety wears (PPE)
 Welfare
 Training

18
3. Indirect labour costs (fixed):
Warehouse management including supervisors and administrators
 Wages including on-costs
 Insurance
 Safety wears (PPE)
 Welfare
 Training

4. Equipment costs (fixed):

 Depreciation/lease costs/rental costs

5. Equipment costs (variable):

 Running costs, e.g. fuel, tyres, lubricants, batteries;
 Packaging, pallets, stretch wrap

6. Overhead costs:
(Management, finance, human resources, IT and administration):
 Salaries and on-costs plus benefits in kind such as mobile
phones, accommodation, etc.;
 Company cars and running costs;
 Office equipment and furniture depreciation/lease/rental costs;
 Information technology costs (hardware and software)

19
The Warehouse and the Environment

In recent years, environmental and waste issues have affected us all,

both at home and at work.
The main areas of energy use in warehouses are heating and lighting,
with research showing that the sector could potentially achieve a 16
per cent reduction in emissions in these areas. In warmer climates
cooling systems will be a significant factor.

Key areas to address in their warehouse operation:

 Warehouse lighting
 Use of renewable energy
 Waste recycling

Solar energy

CCLPD Warehouse achieved carbon neutrality and produces their

own energy for the lighting. This they did by installing solar panels to
the roofs of their warehouses. With the projected generation from the
solar panels at 150 KVA, this completely offset the energy used for
the Hi-bay lighting.

UNIVERSAL RFID SCANNER

Radio-frequency Identification

(RFID)

21
What is RFID (radio frequency identification)?

RFID (radio frequency identification) is a form of wireless communication that incorporates

the use of electromagnetic or electrostatic coupling in the radio frequency portion of the

electromagnetic spectrum to uniquely identify an object, animal or person.

RFID is one method for Automatic Identification and Data Capture (AIDC).

RFID systems-

An RFID system consists of three components: a scanning antenna and transceiver (often

combined into one reader, also known as an interrogator) and a transponder, the RFID tag.

An RFID tag consists of a microchip, memory and antenna.

RFID frequencies: Types of RFID systems

There are three main types of RFID systems:

1. Low frequency (LF)

2. High frequency (HF)

3. Ultra-high frequency (UHF).

• Microwave RFID is also available.

1. Low-frequency RFID systems range from 30 KHz to 500 KHz, though the typical
frequency is 125 KHz. LF RFID has short transmission ranges, generally anywhere from a
few inches to less than six feet.

2. High-frequency RFID systems range from 3 MHz to 30 MHz, with the typical HF
frequency being 13.56 MHz. The standard range is anywhere from a few inches to several
feet.

3. UHF RFID systems range from 300 MHz to 960 MHz, with the typical frequency of 433
MHz and can generally be read from 25-plus feet away.

 Microwave RFID systems run at 2.45 GHz and can be read from more than 30-plus
feet away.

22
