PDQP PROGRESS REPORT Martinez 2

Abstract

This paper will act as a check in of my personal progress of creating my PDQP for my capstone

class. This paper will go over the goals I've achieved, frustrations I’ve been having, questions

that I have, and lastly what my next steps will be.

Goal Achievements

For TED 690 we have been collecting pieces of artifacts to help create a PDQP. We have been

using the Teaching Performance Expectations (TPE’s) as an outline for what teachers should be

doing in order to meet state standards. The TPE’s are broken down into six different domains

which are broken down even further to sub categories. These domains act as a guide line and

road map for teachers. The six teaching performance expectations are the following:

A. Making Subject Matter Comprehensible to Students

B. Assessing Student Learning

C. Engaging and Supporting Students in Learning

D. Planning Instruction and Designing Learning Experiences for Students

E. Creating and Maintaining Effective Environments for Student Learning

F. Developing as a Professional Educator

At this point in time I have completed 4 of the 6 domains. The domains that I have completed are

A,C,D, and F. I have gone through my own bodies of work as well as read and reviewed

literature to help me meet the requirements in each domain that I have completed. The PDQP has

allowed me to look back at work and see how my thoughts and own writing has improved

through my schooling. Looking back at my work has given me the opportunity to re-discover

some of the resources that I had found helpful in the beginning of my schooling. Looking back

on some of the lesson plans that I wrote at the beginning of my credential program has given me

some fresh ideas and ways to accommodate even more in those lessons. Having a chance to look

at each domain in depth has allowed me to see what areas of my teaching that I am meeting

requirements and in areas in which I can improve. At the end of creating my PDQP I will review

each domain and evaluate which domain I need to focus on the most to become a better teacher

for my students.

Frustrations and Concerns

My first concern/frustration came from creating the PDQP. I had created a website prior

to this class and have used it sparingly. Web design is not something that comes naturally to me

and I was frustrated by the amount of time it took to make the website look good apposed to

writing the papers. I know that it is a good skill to have and that it is important to continue to

grow in developing my abilities in technology.

My second frustration came when looking at my resources or artifacts. I found that I had

plenty of material to work from but that I was diving into my search engine trying to remember

where old papers or research articles were that I had saved. If I could do it over I would have

began making a PDQP in my first credential class. This would have allowed me a place to file all

of my work in one place and get a better view at how my writing and own thoughts have

improved while working through the credential program.

The positive thing about my frustrations is that they will push me to continue to grow and

to learn. Technology is constantly changing and it is apart of our future as well as our students

future so it is our responsibility to keep up with technology so that we can continue to teach with

it as well as about it.

Next Steps

I am still in the process of collecting all of the artifacts needed in order to meet the requirements

for all six of the domains. As I look through my bodies of work I continue to add items to the

domains that I have already completed. I feel that it is important that your PDQP has fluidity to

it. It needs to be something that is constantly growing and changing. As teachers we don’t get to

just meet standards once and then be done, we must constantly be meeting standards and finding

new ways to meet them.

Finding ways to meet the standards of the six domains has required me to think critically

as well as creativity. Because of this assignment I now have built new lesson plans and

assessments that I can use for next years class. Looking at the domains forces you as a teacher to

evaluate yourself and truly look at the areas of where you can grow. As a new teacher we are

constantly being pushed to grow and expand but that seems to not be the case as you become

more seasoned. I think having every teacher evaluating themselves through these domains would

be beneficial to them and the students. The domains hold everyone accountable and that is

something that is lacking in our field at times.

I will be finishing my PDQP in the next week, I have to find artifacts that meet Domains

B and E. I will also go back and look at how each domain is presented on my website. I will look

for ways to add color and clarity.

Conclusion

Creating a PDQP is time consuming but can be an invaluable tool once it is completed. I

will continue to use this tool and add files as I move through my teaching. In my district teachers

must go through a process called SPG and having these pieces of evidence in one place will

allow that process to go smoothly.
