MAN Diesel & Turbo ane 28 May 2018 To whom it may Concom ‘The functionality ofthe Index Rate Limiter (IRL) has been changed in ECS ver, 1609- 5 compared to ECS ver. 1609-3 and 1609-4 Index Rate Limiter (IRL) isa new feature to the Torque (Ta) limiter function in ECS ver. 1609.5. The Ta limiter governs together with other liters the highest uel index the engine can be subjected to for a given RPM. The IRL function governs the speed of increase for Ta, which can be applied o the engine in ease the engine load at a alven speed set point changes, Controied increase in index is applied within the ECS govemor as most engines. ‘employ a load up program that ensures tat the rpm from 80% to 80% is nereased ‘incrementally over 30 min and from 90% rpm to 100% rpm it is increased incrementally ver 60 min During load up, the fut index i effectively increased approximately 0.55%imin from 80% to 90% speed and 0.27%Imin from 90% to 100% speed. This fs done to ‘minimize intemal thermal deformation relates problems eaused by quick heat load ‘changes tothe piston, piston rings and liners, ‘The Index rate limiter (/RL) becomes effective at manoeuvre full +1 REM, which ‘means that there is normaly no limitation during ship manoeuvring, IRL astvates at the same RPM level asthe govemor Torque Mode is acvated, when apeiied ‘Below manoeuvre ful RPM, Governor Mode is default made, which provides instant Fesponse from speed setting within the standard bul in governor mites. Above ‘manoeuvre full, preferred made is Tq made. ‘The intention with IRL is to secure the engine from sudden rapid power insrease ‘above manoeuvring speed. In effect, ithe operational conditions for the vessel ‘change during load up or at steady steaming, eg. changes in depth, ruddar ‘movement, or other impacts which may cause the engine to run heavier a a given RPM, only the Tq limit would be effective in securing the engine from oveload sae gen =.
